What's up with Al Reed?

I had talked to Mr. Reed a few weeks ago about redoing some 16" 7's and 8's I bought on here. I've been trying to call him for nearly a week and get only a message with their hours but no call-back. Hope everything is OK with them--maybe he's on vacation or something? Anybody know what's going on?

Yeah, let me know how your wheels look when you get them back next year... assuming he doesn't tell you to call back in a few months.

Hope they are just on vacation. Al did my deep 6's and they look brand new and the turnaround time was very good. Talked to Al and his wife a couple of times and they are good down to earth folks.

I meant no disrespect to Al, I've read his work is great. I was just giving an option. I've read that Harvey's work is also outstanding. I also have a set of wheels being refinished by him. Hopefully the lead time he gave me was accurate. The wheels are part of my ongoing suspension parts collection.

And I meant no disrespect to Harvey. I've just heard that his backlog is... substantial.

I'd look into Harvey. His quality is top notch and well worth a wait. I recently had a set of 5 wheels completed by him in about 2.5 months.

My experience with Harvey was very positive. In fact, he spent a lot of time talking with me on the phone about refinishing my Fuchs. They look perfect!

I dropped off a set of Fuchs to Al and based on the stacks of wheels in the back I would say there is a good chance it will be a while.

I imagine all the wheel restoration houses are full.

Oh well, can't be in a rush to have alloys refinished.

+1 for Harvey. He refinished my fuchs on my '85. Still looked great when I sold my car 13 years later.

Send a message via ICQ to dirk turbeaux
Al has gotten behind a bit - his wife Diane has been sick. It may take a while to get a hold of him as he is working through a backlog.

Al's Phone

I too have been trying to get ahold of Al and his phone has been either disconnected or out of service for the last 3 days. Hope everything is ok with them. I'll keep trying and see what comes up.

Both the fax number and telephone number are disconnected. Two people have gone over there during normal biz hours and its been locked up. We have three sets of clients' rims there and you can bet we are "enjoying" this situation with NO communication.

A friend is posting a note on their door for us today, and we'll see what comes of that. I feel deeply for the family problems BUT some form of communication would go a long way !

Adding some historical perspective:

"Al Reed" polishing

... and why doing business with Al & Diane can be difficult if you happen to hit one of their rough spots.

Everyone talks about how nice they are and how great their shop is, etc. to which I have no doubt. But this pattern just doesn't make sense for businessowners who care about their customers. It all comes down to whether you happen to be a customer who's wheels are held hostage. I'm very sorry Diane is ill but to completely shut down communications is not cool.

I'm in the same boat as Dave @ TRE.

Been since May with a set of wheels, and tires shipped to his shop. Last communucation was about 3 weeks ago with Al. On a whim I got lucky and Al answered the phone. He jokingly said "your wheels are not ready" before I could identify myself. Then apologetically, explained the situation.
Diane is sick, with cancer again. I feel for the family, but some form of better communication and opening the shop so those that want to go elsewhere with our wheels can do so. Prayers and good thoughts for Diane, hoping she has a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile it's going to be a long wait...

Dang - that's sad - good people - I feel sorry for the folks that have wheels there - but knowing Al - he will make good on it

I had hit oneof Al's "rough spots" getting some wheels done. This was after Diane had recovered and was back at work (although it sounds as if she may be sick again). While he did make it right in the end it was quite an ordeal and I learned my lesson.
