max displacement

What is the max displacement that 3.0 SC case can be taken out to?

What is your budget?? $$ will get you bigger, in a non-linear fashion...:p

Hi Rick,

I think the question should re-phrased as "What is the max displacement that a 3.0 SC case can be taken out to without compromising durability?" :) :)

You can use 100mm pistons & cylinders along with a 3.6 crank using custom rods and a lot of massage work. Larger P/C's can be installed, however there are some major compromises to be considered.

One needs a realistic budget to do all this.

Hope this helps,

I have 79 sc 3.0 case and thought about building a nice motor, but I can buy a late model 3.6 for $7-9K. If I can build a 3.5 like the one Wayne mentions in his book that would ne great, but it will cost a ton of money so that is why i am asking. If I shop around for a crank and standard off the shelf connecting, pistons and rings and have the heads reworked I think I could get out with less than $10K and around 250-275 HP. Again a good 3.6 from a late model can do this also, but the install cost and amount of work ti do the job right is pretty high.

The bigger it is...the sooner it blows up!
The stages of engine size are: Stock...Larger Displacement...Still more CC's....and finally...Hand Grenade!
If you look at all the different uses for engines throughout the decades, the biggest and highest horsepower ones are usually for some type of racing.
The best (or worst) are Drag engines...made to last for 10 seconds....very expensive...4000 - 5000 HP.
So ....choose carefully....a large displacement engine with lower compression...and lots of torque will get you there....and probably will last a long time.
It's like winding up a spring....the tighter the spring...the more power...but less life.
Personally...I am torn between a small displacement turning 10K RPM or more...and a large one turning 7K and bellowing like a bull....LOL

well put

of course, the faster you spin it, the sooner it wears out or blows up...

For street use, you cannot beat a late-model 3.6 for all around torque, drivability and power. Further, it runs nicely on any kind of fuel due to its knock-sensing Motronic system.

Although you'll need dual front oil coolers, its well worth the effort to do the 3.6!!

Amen to what Steve said! After six 911s, my '80SC with a 3.6 is the most pleasing Porsche experience I've had. No drama, and all the annoyances of my previous 911s (Carbs, MFI, CIS, chain tensioners, ignition etc) are history! Plus, it goes like STINK!!
