OK, then....

Harald -

I'm fine that you are soliciting the opinions of the forum members, but I would have preferred that you contacted me privately and attempted to work out the issue instead of just posting such a reply. I contacted you much earlier today privately and have received no response until seeing this message...

I've made every effort to remain polite and treat everyone involved with respect, as I am sure you can understand by the tone of my messages above. It is and remains my intention to solve this situation between us and (hopefully) report back to the "internet public" what my experience was like. I have been contacted by many people privately who are quite interested in how this transaction goes, as they are looking for a source of quality Porsche engines. I've given your contact information to them, with the caveat that the transaction is not yet complete and I'll keep everyone informed of the success of the purchase process.

Again, I would urge you to contact me privately and resolve this.

There is no rule to say what comes with it. Certainly things like sheetmetal and heater blowers are in the "grey area" that can go either way. I think it behooves everyone involved to supply clear photos of the goods from several different angles and also to provide a detailed inventory list of exactly what's included. If you don't do this then you're bound to have problems down the road even if both sides are innocent of any wrong doing.

Bottom line, communicate with eachother.

I really don't want to get caught up in this, however, in the interest of facilitating reconciliation on both parties part, I will throw in my 2 cents. First, IMHO I agree with Harald that the matter should have been taken up with him before taking it public.
That being said, if the description specifically excluded the exhaust, I can understand that all the exhaust items, say below the shroud would be missing. This obviously leaves the blower up for debate. Negotiable, I suppose.
If the description included DME & harness, IMHO the coil and ignition modules should be included. They are part of the electronic control of the engine and a real gotcha cost wise if you have to find repalcements.
There is no bell crank on most 964's, so don't expect to get one.
Lastly, all the shrouding should be with the engine, unless its specifically excluded. Replacing shroud parts from 964, or for that matter any Porsche engine , is very expensive even for used pieces.
A final word on conversions-they are not trivial, just ask any of the guys who have done them. Dr. Timmons points out the pit falls of buying an engine from a third party on his web site. It may be a great deal, or it may be a nightmare. The devil is in the detail, both from the knowledge standpoint, as well the age old caveat emptor. If you venture out on this limb, you need to have a parachute, either in your wallet, or with someone you can trust. I wouldn't even climb the tree unless you have about $12k budgeted.

Thanks for the reply. I would have to agree with your analysis on the subject. The blower inclusion is somewhat debatable.

For the record, I contacted Harald privately on the subject first well before posting here.

While my terminology may be off, the throttle body link in question is this:

This linkage is for the 964 cruise control. It isn't required for a retrofit conversion and isn't always on all 964's. It is easy to set up the old 3.0L cruise control without it.

Since you were buying an engine to do a swap, you should have explicitly verified all of the bits where going to come with it. I think the ignition bits should have gone with it as a matter of principle.

From what I've seen and experienced, a lot of sellers will ship the bare miniumum they can get away with and then try to liquidate the extras separately. I see this all too often in the VW world as well as the Porsche world.

To me, the phrase "Complete from Aircleaner to Heatexchanger" would mean everything - blower, coils, tin - everything.

Trust, but verify.

Aha!

Well that explains it!

Hard to discuss when I only spent about five minutes looking at it last night...

Thanks for the info! Now I have cruise control to think about. No easy way to use the Carrara control, eh?

And I had one of the complete 3.0 cruise controls sitting in the attic until about two years ago. <duh!>

Re: Aha!

That's OK - the conversion throttle linkage eliminates any hope you had of cruise control anyway...

This is a simple enough misunderstanding. Someone (seller or buyer) should have put together a list. My personal feeling is that the blower is a separate item, but that the coils should be included. But that's just my opinion. Obviously, there's no generally-accepted list of what's included in an engine for a swap. A list made prior to shipping would have cleared this up.

I've dealt with Harald, and he's a good guy, in my opinion. From the message posted here, he seems to be proceeding in good faith.

I'm sure you guys can work this stuff out. Keep in mind, Chris, you're getting a pretty good deal on that engine.

Speedster94 06-04-2002 01:41 PM

engine

hallo jack
thank you for the nice comment .
Do you remember that you owe me a beer ( or 2 ) for your Coils ,because we forgot to mention them? They are usually not included with a 964 Engine .
I think we solved the Problem already (250$ for all wanted Parts ).
I too think for that Price it is a great engine and also i shipped it for 500 instead of 650 because i got a good deal on the Freight and passed it on . I havent seen a Engine yet with this parameters for that Price .
The most strange thing for me was to learn from this board that
there is a problem before Chris contacted me .
I hope it is solved now and ship the Parts asap.

I agree with Jack O,
I am purchasing from Harald as well. He is Very Nice and replies very fast and keeps NO secrets about the item and the condition of what he is selling to you. If anyone on the BBS is or has has thought of purchasing from Harald ....AKA " SPEEDSTER94" you should fear NOTHING as he would NOT do you wrong! in anyway... I plan to buy from him again in the future. If you are reading this Harald Thanks for everything!

Just to follow up...

I have been waiting since June for the parts to arrive from Harald. Apparently, they were lost in the mail, and Harald di provide some documentation that appears to support this. The items were sent via Deutch Post, not UPS or FedEx, so there is not tracking information available (arrgghhh!). Harald has made arrangements to have a third party loan me the parts until they show up, but the third party does NOT have all the items to loan me that I need to complete the conversion (rear sheet metal being a glaring example). So, I've done my part and paid an extra $250 for parts that I believe should have been included with a complete engine. But two months + later, I still don't have the parts and still cannot do my conversion.
