Replace a 2.7 Engine?
Long story short: 78 911 Targa needing replacement of a oil leaking 2.7 engine.
Needs seat skins and some elbow grease but overall not too bad. Price asked is $8000 but I can get it for less. Questions: 1. A worthy undertaking for my first 911 project? 2. Realistic price? 3. Worth buying and driving with leaky 2.7 while saving $5000 for engine swap? Thanks - Dickson |
Who put a 2.7 in a '78?
Should be a 3.0 |
Welcome and good luck with your project. However...
I'm sure you will get a lot of support here but you are going to need to give more details about the car. Pictures will help. Especially of the motor. BTW 1978 911s have a 3.0 motor, not a 2.7. |
Yes, confirm that it is a 2.7 and not a 3.0.
As for oil leaks, why not try to hunt them down and resolve them rather than replacing the engine? |
Engine choices
You can upgrade to an EFI 3.2 Motronic for that kind of money. Then you have more fun, on less fuel...:D:D

Yes, I'm aware that it should be a 3.0....Not sure why the 2.7 swap.
I've decided that this is a project better left to someone else. I'm holding out until I can buy a much better candidate. THANKS |
what makes you believe it is a 2.7 ?

Well, it was a 2.7RS :D |

Good call. My 2.7 runs fine, has no leaks, etc., but if you are not comfortable with a swap (if needed!) then get another car. |
