86 carrera valve train noise
Hi guys, have a quick question. I recently purchased a 1986 carrera. After purchasing I noticed it had a bent valve on cylinder 1 (stupid me for not getting a PPI).
I had the car fixed at a very reputable Porsche shop near by. The car runs great, except it seems to be a bit noisy. They replaced the valve and seat on #1, and I'm wondering I they left the lash on that valve a little bigger to compensate for break-in? I'm new to Porsches, so I'm unsure of what normal noise is. Here is a quick video of the car. I have put about 800miles since it was repaired. Thanks! 911 idle - YouTube Last edited by Alex86911; 09-13-2012 at 04:37 PM.. |

It's pretty loud...valve adjust is easy and will be the first step in diagnosing it.

Readjusting the valves after having engine/top end work done was recommended at about 1000 miles. A oil change too is a good idea.
Question: How did the valve get bent? Valve spring broken or bad tensioner? |

They weren't entirely sure, they said it seemed as though something had gone through the cylinder. There was no damage to the exhaust valve or piston crown though.
As said, the car seems to run great, I am going to re adjust the valves in the upcoming weeks. I just wanted to see if you guys thought it sounded okay. Aside for the bit of valve noise, does everything else sound good? |

Sounds good to me and a valve adjustment should take care of the valve chatter. If it doesn't then you may have bigger problems.
