Oil Temp
I know there is probably a thread where this is described but having a hard time finding it.
Can anyone tell me what temps equal the bars on the oil temp gauge on an 83 911 SC stock 3.0L? I am curious to see what temp it is running at since the weather has heated up here. What is the normal running temp? Thanks,

Bill,
In the upper right corner of every page is the "search" button. Might give it a try as there really is a lot of information in the archives. That said, here is one answer to your question... Temp Gauge Readings Normal running temp depends on where you are, outside temp, how fast you are running or sitting in traffic and a/c on or not and many other factors. Would like to see 90-100c most of the time and until the oil temp is above the first white mark on your gauge its a good idea to stay below 3500 rpm's. You do not want the oil to get above 120c or so for long life and any operation at these temps need to be with synt (mobil 1 or the like) and not normal dino oil. Hope this helps... Joe

i was told i could find number just out of sight if i look at the gauge from an angle on my 78sc last week. i looked with a flash light as directed and could not find them. about 3 minutes in i started wondering if it was like in highschool when i worked at a lumberyard and we always sent the new guy on a search for the board-stretcher. the board-strectcher was a myth, dint exist, was like a snype, was i hunt snype?
i realize that all gauges are going to be a bit different in thier sensitivity and reading,, but say my gauge is reading the 9 O'clock position,, what might that be temp wise? still not hot, still uninformed

This came up a few days ago.
The temp guage does have numbers in deg. C, but you need to look way to the side to see them. Here is a pic from an older thread: ![]() Tom |

On a cool evening/night, my '86 Turbo will run at 85 C. or so on the freeway. During the day, in stop and go, I am at 100-110 most of the time. I have seen it creep near 120 on a very hot day, with A/C going, sitting in traffic.
