911e Nov 1968 sportsmatic timing error ?

Hi,

What is my problem ?,
I cannot gt the ignition timing right, It only runs good on tickover and pickup when the timing is set to 30 btdc on tickover I have tried to set it at 30 btdc at 6000 rpm but it will not tickover and the pickup is poor, the advance bob weights are working ok as it advances from tickover 30 btdc as the revs increase to 6000rpm to 45 btdc, the engine dose not appear to pink or pre-ignition, and it pulls and revs well, I have checked the Bosch fuel injection settings and they seem to be correct ( 114mm linkage rod and 149.5mm linkage rods ),
I am stumped on what to do next as I am worried that I will damaged the engine,
Regards,
Tony, Totnes UK.

I am laughing out loud(LOL). I had to google"tickover" to know what you were talking about. Here in America the term is idling. Any way, you obviously have a problem. Either your reading is incorrect( using wrong pulley marks) or the engine has been set up weirdly. I can't imagine the timing being at 30 btdc at "tickover(he he). The advance curve of the distributor should be about 35 degrees. On my 69E I set the timing at 4 ATDC at tickover and at 6000 RPM it is at 32 BTDC. I would start with your readings and then pull the distributor and have it tested. Good luck.

Tony, I suggest you search for Sporto or sportomatic, you might find a lot of info.
