'85 911 targa - asking 50K for it

Hi there,

Now that I've got your attention, was wondering what the market was for my car, and what I could get. The only reason I'm asking is because I may opt for a newer 993. Here goes:

*'85 Targa (triple black)
*body is an 8.5 to 9 out of 10. No dings, no major chips
interior is a 9 out of 10
*59,000 miles
*full tranny rebuild 5K miles ago along with new power sachs clutch
*new alternator
*performance chip
*Borla dual out muffler (serious extra power and sound)
*16" fuchs
*H4's (have damaged H1's in the box as well as stock lights too)
*Alpine cd/stereo and too much other audio to list (i know this doesn't matter much though)
*factory tail with third light and front spoiler too
*power windows/locks/seats (heated too), etc.
*car tuned and runs extremely well
*and most important, cool collar installed (ha ha)
*many small things repaired/replaced too (window regulators and switches, etc)

Definitely one of the cleaner Carreras in my area. Let me know what you think. I'm in the NY-Tri State area, not LA so my car is NOT a dime a dozen here.

thanks,

Your probably hoping for more but I would say between 15 and 16K MAX. Cars are hard to sell right now, even a car as wonderful as a 911.

Bump.....a little more feedback here please. I'm not expecting a million bucks, but is 20K feasible?

thanks.

Given the mileage, you might pull it off. Targa tops seem to hurt price in my neck of the woods, not help. The question is what is worth more to you? 16k as soon as you place the ad, or 20k when the right buyer shows up after a year or more?

I have almost a duplicate of your car except it is red with 35,000 miles. Last summer I had someone offer me $22K just out of the blue. I was tempted because that could get me in a Mini-Cooper S with little additional $. But I have owned my 1985 911 Targa for 15 years and am somewhat attached to it.
However, here we are in winter and the economy is a bit grim, not the best time to sell. If you can wait for the spring ask for $22K and take $20K, if the economy perks up ask $24K and take $22K. Try EBay, sometimes you can hookup with a buyer who wants just what you have and some of those buyers can be a bit nutty about how much they will pay for exactly the car they want. For what its worth, the Aug, 2002 issue of Excellence has a market survey on "911: 1974-89". A 1985 Targa in "poor" condition is listed at $15.5K, "good" at $17.6, and "excellent" at $23.6. Your car is probably in that last category. If you are going to buy a 993 from a dealer, I would like to know what kind of trade-in value they would put on your car. I'm sure it would be shockingly low but it might be nice for us to know the trade-in amount.

It seems to depend heavily on location and demand. I would think you might get more in the spring than now too. I realistically think you could get anywhere from 16 to 20. You may even get more, but I would say a good average for a really good shape '85 would be 17-19 (really good shape). If you get more it's either because there aren't many to chose from in your area or the person isn't well informed since the pre G50 cars seem to be in the mid to high teens.

I just recently purchased an identical car (Black/Black '85 Targa) other than the fact that it has 49,000 miles. I believe the previous owner had it priced originally around $27,000, I ended up purchasing it for $21,500.
