Setting Timing on Re-Build, Before I *&@$# it up
Waiting on the RSR o-rings for the Rocker Shaft to come in Friday and wanted some clarification on setting the timing. I am putting together an '83 3.0L as close to factory as I can get it. Everything is assembled up to setting timing and putting in Rocker arms.
I have the Crankshaft on Z-1 and both cams with 930 pointing up. Distributor is at TDC mark. Plugs out. Carrera upgrade tensioners are installed, pins are NOT removed. Chains have no additional tension on them. No rocker shaft is installed. If I understand the procedure correctly my next steps in assembly are: 1. Place tension on chains and remove pins from Carrera tensioners. 2. Install cylinder 1 intake and exhaust rocker shafts with rocker arms. 3. Test with feeler guage. etc per Bentley.... Any other suggestions or am I on the right track? Thanks, |
install #1 and #4 intake rockers and shafts, and tighten shafts. set #1 clearance to .004. you will do #4 when you are ready to set the cam timing on that side. setup the dial indicator on the flat top edge of #1 spring retainer. zero the gauge. rotate engine 360° clockwise, and stop at exactly Z1. the gauge will read the amount the valve opened. compare it to the spec and readjust as necessary. then do the same on #4 cyl.

I would like to add, the factory manual suggests you "wedge" the tensioners a little tighter. On the left side I use a small c-clamp, on the right I use a small block of hard-wood to jam between the tensioner and the idler arm. Also you will have to set the cam timing, then tighten the cam nut and see how much the torque of tightening the cam nut affects the timing. After you see how tightening the cam nut changes the cam timing.... you can adjust your initial settings. Its really easy to do... |
Thanks yall, I will set the tensioners and get to work Friday. Hopefully I can finish this weekend, all things being equal and the sun still rising ....
