Chain Tensioner Upgrade
I'm going to upgrade from the original tensioners on my 72 911T 2.4 MFI to the oil fed tensioners.
Can somebody tell me all of the parts I will need? I know i need the tensioner kit, but I believe there are some other parts as well. Thanks, ian |

Ian,
Oh yeah, the muffler has to come off ... so you will need 2 new gadkets, and to replace the rusted bolts that will take Fire and Brimstone to remove ... 4 new M10 x 35 mm bolts and nuts for the muffler flamges, and 2 M10 x 50 mm Allen bolts (or used CV-joint bolts) for the muffler band clamps. An acetylene torch would be handy to have on hand for muffler bolt removal ... heat the nuts to cherry red before applying slight torque to tighten, then loosen the nuts. A M8 Allen drive bit will be needed for the band bolts.

What else do I need???
So far the way I figure..... I need
1) Tensioner update Kit 2) Shoudl I replace or update the idler arms, or go with the spacers? The idler arms cost about $150 for 2, is it worth it??? 3) Muffler Gasket 4) Chain Ramps, should I replace these as well? Will I replace all of them?? 5) Dont I need to deal with 2 studs that wont be long enough or something??? Anything else, besides beer and a pipe wrench?? |

Do a search under your own name and keyword "studs"; the info on the studs you need is in a answer to your previous post in May on this topic. You'll need some other parts (hollow bolt, fitting block, three or four metal seal rings, plug or adapter bushing) to make the standard kit passenger side cam tower oil line work. If you have A/C it gets even more complicated; oil pressure sender has to be moved to the front of the engine. Do a search to get the oil line fitting parts numbers; this was also covered in an old issue of Pano. Jim

Ian
Drop me an email if you want my step-by-step instructions for doing this job, together with a parts list and other information that I put together for myself, before tackling this job on my 72 T last summer. The instructions cover R&R of the tensioners, ramps, oil return tubes, SSI heat exchangers, crankcase to oil filter console oil line, motor mounts, etc. I'd be happy to email them to you.

Don't forget to read Wayne's article.
Tensioner Upgarde Also there was recenly a thread about bad tensioners. I believe the pressure relief valve was the problem. Frank |

Yes, the idler arms were changed in response to chain tensioner failures (as per Porsche tech book).
Here is a tech article on the install: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_carrera_chain_tensioners/911_carrera_chain_tensioners2.htm -Wayne
