My business partner for years was buying newer 911's and I spent a little time driving them. 993's and 996's mostly. They are a blast to drive; comfy, tons of torque and actual HVAC systems.
Not for me though, I like how raw and simple my '89 is.

The author sounds like he's a member of the 911SCWDP in spirit, if not in actuality.

Couldn't agree more

I love all the 911's. I'd like an example of each in my garage. But when i'm at a stop light and a new 997 4S pulls up beside me. He rolls down his window and yells out how much he loves my car.

It's a timeless joy that I experience every time I turn the key.

Very good story. Just the motivation I need to get in the garage and put mine back together.

met a guy with a Panamera last week....he told me (jokingly, I assumed) that he'd trade me straight across for my '88. We laughed for a sec, then he told me "hold onto that car". We didn't talk long, but I got the distinct impression that he was an enthusiast.

I keep my '84 Cab out of the love of it. I run the 997 Turbo when I need a boost, and the Panomera 4S is just a beast. After running through the newer ones, I always look forward to the screaming 3.2 and all the smells that go with it.

That was a good read.

So a couple weeks ago I went on a drive to the NC mountains. I had the only old 911 out of the bunch of 996s and Boxsters. At a stop, a guy walked up to my window and said "you know you have the best looking car of the bunch don't you?" "That's a real 911"

Made my whole day.

Nice read and I have to agree. Shopping for a new 997S didn't do a thing for me. While a great modern sports GT, they were just too practical and boring.

I'd love to add a mid_year car to the garage and am going to start shopping in 2013.

Back in the late 90's I was in Mountain View, CA for a meeting with a VP at Netscape (remember them?). The company had recently gone public and made a bunch of dot com millionaires. My colleague and I had been shown into the VP's corner office by his secretary while we waited for him. We were looking out his window and laughing about how the parking lot looked like a Porsche dealership. (Best job in the Valley was being a Porsche dealer.)

In one of the front parking spaces was a beautiful late 60's Mercedes-Benz convertible. We were pointing at it when the VP came in and he asked what we were looking and pointing at. We said "There's at least one REALLY smart person that works here -- that's the only car in the parking lot that's actually APPRECIATING in value."

He just got a big grin on his face and said "thanks, that's mine!"

I think about that sometimes. Now I'm the one with the big grin on my face!

The author could, in theory, drive any car he wants, but chooses a 78 SC. So, I guess I'm happy! I'm already there too.

Exactly why I bought a torsion bar 911 with a 915 trans. I just love the quirky vintage feeling the car offers.
