This has been around for a while. Originally, Japanese gangsters would take Japanese 4 door sedans and modify them so that the cars (in their eyes) looked and performed better than much more expensive European equivalents. Now it's become a fad of 1-ups-manship that keeps getting more and more stupid. Just like the stance movement. It's 100% about look to the point that the cars aren't even drivable anymore. But then comes the other part of the scene. It becomes a point of pride to drive the cars regularly and then show pics of how much you beat them up by just driving them around.

As is also seen in this video. The total moronic idiocy of this fad occurs at 1:21.

It is just a style thing. Not much to get. As low as possible with deep dish wheels that are as wide as possible. If you run into clearance problems, use skinnier tires and/or a tonne of camber.
Think of it like wearing baggy jeans or bell bottoms. They started out a little baggy, or with a small bell bottom, and as time goes on the style gets more and more exaggerated. Like Will Hung says, A series of one-ups-manship until you have something that is at best stupid and ugly and at worst dangerous. Even more mild examples wouldnt appeal to many people here, though personally I sometimes like them (the mild ones anyway)

I just came from this styling...I love it and takes a certain person...but I'm back in the german car game. What do you want to know about them? The following is huge in Japan, and the amount of work is pretty intense, but its mainly exterior/suspension and interior. Most cars are stock engine except for the few that slide as well. Many of the cars have radius'd fenders to lower the car to millimeters off the ground. My ls430's frame is laying about 3/4" off the ground....its annoying but also very fun at the same time.
![]() But its nice to be in a car that has full suspension travel again. ![]() Last edited by Mr.Doback; 09-19-2012 at 02:57 PM.. |

The look of a low four door with wide wheels is nice to me too, My issue with this movement it the maga camber some have. It's retarded to me. By retarded, I'm saying that it's disabling.
I like nice looks, but form always follows function for me. With these, function didn't really play as part of the design.

I don't get the extreme camber deal either. That started with drift cars, but the levels these guys are using are just stupid. You shouldn't be throwing sparks driving down the road because your inner lips are rubbing the road.

Can the car even take a 90 degree turn? I want to see this car turn right at an intersection.

And that is supposed to imply "Gangsta - Japanese Style"? More like "Stupid - Japanese Style".
![]() I mean, no offense, but shouldn't a car be able to turn correctly? And sorry, Japanese cars will always be inferior to German cars. Flame suit on......

Dumb, stupid, moronic - Wow, seems like a pretty narrow minded viewpoint just because they’re not Porsches and it’s not your cup of tea. You have classic styles that have been around for a while like hot rods and American muscle cars. But for the younger generation, if you weren’t brought up around this stuff, then it may lack appeal. So many from the newer generations are doing exciting and different stuff with their Japanese cars. We’re all familiar with the Fast and Furious “ricer” look that has been around for a while. Now newer styles are evolving such as the Japanese take on the rat rod look called “hoodride” (Google that one), the Stance movement, and the VIP look.
I say, “To each their own”. If you don’t like the style, then don’t do it your car, but there is no need to degrade the style just because you don’t care for it. Personally, I am just tickled that the younger generation is taking ANY interest in their cars and looking for ways to individualize them. This is good for the overall aftermarket automotive industry and a good hobby for the younger generation to get into. So regardless as to whether or not I like the style, I still respect the work and effort that goes into these builds, just as I respect the hot rods and muscle cars that many work on tirelessly. Also… I think the guys who are building these kinds of cars have a LOT more imagination than your average Porsche guy. What we call a “hot rod” or “rat” here on Pelican is laughable. People think they can paint their 911 flat black and call it a rat. They think they can hop up their engine and call it a hot rod. Call it whatever you want, but the truth is that most of what we are doing with our cars is just plain boring… Google these terms and you will see cars that go far, far, far beyond what we do with our Porsches. As an example, take a look at Singer’s “re-imagined” Porsche 911. I’m not going to call it dumb, stupid, or moronic, but I will say that their imagination must be limited as it pretty much looks like… well, a back dated 911. :-P The Singer Vehicle Design ‘restored & reimagined’ Porsche 964Motor Vision Blog |

While I get what you're saying, where the "Dumb" comes in is simple- The vast majority of automotive upgrades and fads have started with increases in performance, or at least mimicking race cars. Camaro's in the '70's were "jacked up" in the rear to mimic drag cars, the silly wings adorning the trunk of Honda Civics over the last decade mimicking Formula 1 aerodynamics. The extreme camber is the opposite- Not only does it serve no purpose, it makes the car less useful for its intended purpose. I can personalize my coffee mug by drilling holes in it. While I can be proud of my work, I have reduced its usefulness. You would call me dumb, and rightfully so. To each his own is correct. I support anybody's choice to wear a polyester leisure suit, and I support people's choice to laugh at the guy wearing the polyester leisure suit. |

It's true, we Porsche-o-philes do less to change the overall look and dynamics than other car folk, but some of that reasoning is value. Our cars have an inherant value that rises, and can be damaged with changine the origionality too much. For instance, I had a 911sc and wanted to keep it as is but it was stolen and the VIN ripped from the trunk and a pillar. Well the cops got it back and I was left with a car that looked like some ghetto dream car. What to do? Well since it was virtually worthless because of the vin issue now, I went ahaed and made it what I wanted, a 76carrera 3.0 look with a complete colorchange and added wheels color matched with the red carrera graphics. Ended up selling it for 7K, less than it's value if it were right.
But these other cars, can only be helped with changes and their value isn't really hurt and in some cases they're made more valuable by changing them. This is only one point of view. Sure, it's a fad and a style, buy rediculous camber cars are retarded. The same car can have the wheels tucked under the fender and made more managable and look great but riding on the edge of the big fat tire is so wrong it can't be ignored.
