964 spoiler is stuck

Help, when coming home the other day I tried to manually deploy my spoiler to cool things down and it stopped. Now it also doesn't work in automatic mode.

It's about 10% up now and I can't get it to budge. Already checked the fuse (#37) and that is ok.

Any other troubleshooting advice? How hard to change out the spoiler motor? Any advice out there?

Beuhler, Beuhler...

Ok so I don't have a SC or a early 70's car a 3.6...

So, has anybody done this before?

Maybe I just need to replace it with a tail - though I like the clean look of tailless 911...

Maybe when I replace P&C's with 3.8 or 4.0 L or go with the RUF turbo conversion and 425 hp I will need the added cooling...

Try asking on the Rennlist 964 forum - I'm sure someone on there will know.
There's a Pelican tech. article on changing the rear wing out, but it doesn't go into any detail on the mechanism.
Hope this helps.

Thank you - I did try the rennlist forum too. Appreciate you responding. BTW what happened to England in the second half vs Sweden? It's like they were drinking at haltime...

Jeremy,

My 993 wing was stuck this past week, only raising 20% of the way. It turns out the mounting hardware for the motor/drive gear (left side under wing) was loose. I tightened it up and found that the gears still weren't lining up well, resulting in slippage, and the wing still wouldn't go up all the way. I don't have a workshop manual yet, so I looked for adjustments that might effect the alignment. I found an adjustment screw by the gears that is adjustable with a screwdriver. After turning it a bit, the gears seemed to mesh better and the wing is back in operation. After I get a manual, I'll check to see if what I did was the right thing. I hope this helps for your problem.

Regards,

Jim

I had a similar problem with the 964 lid I put on my car. The root problem was that the gear and joints were dirty and it put too much strain on the motor. (yes I was involved in some dust-ups on the track)

The strain resulted in a burnt motor coil. I checked around, couldn't find a decent price on a used motor so I rewound the coil myself. Magnet wire cost me about $10 and a number of evenings to do the winding and soldering.

You can disconnect the wire at the motor to check if you are getting 12V across the pins or not when the switch is in either position. If you get a 12V level then you've got motor problems, if not then it's the control box (I'm assuming both limit switches wouldn't bust simultaneously).

Good luck,
jc

K9handler - appreciate your honesty. No, I would prefer to keep the tailess look.

JC- thanks for the insight - that is what I think it is... I will try your suggestion and will report back after I take it apart this weekend for a looksee.

Appreciate all the comments - I figured someone ran into this before.

If you look under the Hood you will see the Motor for your Spoiler.
On 1 side you see the Powerline going in and on the other side the Cable going to your Spoiler ( looks like a Speedometercable)
You can gently pull that out and turn it by Hand to get the Spoiler in .
If you can turn it by Hand with not too much force you know the
mechanism is fine .
Now you turn the Button inside the Car and you should hear the Motor running .
A common Problem are the Microswitches on the Hinges for the Spoiler. They are under the Plastik cover ( 2 phillipshead screws)
Check those before you replace the Motor . Replacing the Motor is very simple and takes about 20 Minutes ( 3 Inbus Bolts and a Plug
in for the Electric)
