Anyone ever do a smog pump rebuild

So heres the story, I just bough a 1979 Porsche 911sc 3 days ago out in ohio. Then a light went on and i went to go inspect the engine. Turns out when i bought it, there was never a belt going to the smog pump/air pump. Anyway, over time, it seems to have stiffened up because it isn't spinning freely like i think it should. So my question is do i remove the entire unit and take my chances with emmisions or should i get it rebuilt. If rebuilding is the case, has anyone ever done it before. I would be curious to see what all is involved in doing this and whether i would be able to do it or if i should take it to a mechanic.

I would try to inject some light oil into the bearing surface to free it up, if possible.

Do you have emissions testing in oHIo? If not, remove the pump and it's bits and clean up the engine bay some. A search here will get you more detailed info on the removal.

I once tried it on 82 Landcruiser smog pump, but without success. Bearings and inside vanes were beyond repair. Had to buy a new one. But the bearings being a problem on the attached components, I, for years now, made sure that the belts are as lose as possible. Just so they don't sqeal. Never had a bearing failure since.

So from what i'm hearing, you guys think that its a bad bearing that need oiled. Only question is that it's a no oiling smog pump. Will oiling the bearing be a problem. Also, i should have mentioned that i bought the car in ohio but i live in NJ

I don't KNOW that it can be oiled and freed up but it's worth a try. If it works, great. If not, then I would look for a good used pump instead of trying to rebuild the original.

Where in NJ are you? You don't need to install the smog pump in our Tri-state area to pass inspection. Actually, most people I know including myself have removed smog pump in their cars. But if you insist of having one, I think I have one for you.

Tony, is it only if you dont pass emissions that you need the smog pump. My plan is to just go see if i can pass it w/o the pump and if i dont pass ill worry about the pump. If i can pass i will renove the pump

PorscheAmateur,

The emission law in NJ could be slightly different than PA. I don't drive my SC more than 5K miles a year, no catalytic converter, and have no problem passing the emission test every year and I live just outside Philly. Passed the test this summer. California smog test is quite different. Tune-up the car, change oil, and drive the car 30 mins. before getting to the inspection station and see what happens. Keep us posted.
