Fuel smell only one complete fill ups

I get a fuel smell only when I completely fill up and as I use fuel it goes away over time. What is the cause?

Check all the rubber hoses (big and little) in the front trunk. Old? Cracked? connections loose? It's probably time to replace them all anyway.

Gasket in cap, carbon canister if you have may be soaked or end of life.

I have a big trip this weekend. I just ordered a new fuel sending unit gasket and a new gas cap gasket to be over nighted from our host. I will also run to the local auto parts store tomorrow and pick up some fuel line stock for the small hose on the expansion tank. I think the canister is in the rear and this is definitely coming from the trunk space.

I have found that if I try to "top it off" there is a small amount of backsplash and the ensuing smell. When I let it stop on the automatic shutoff - no smell.

Does anyone know the inner diameters of the tubing coming out of the expansion tank by the filler neck. I already replaced the one, but I don't know the ID's of the other two and unfortunately I'm not in front of the car to measure them.

One of five or more reasons NOT to top off once the latch has clicked off....UNLESS it's not obviously full.

I never go past the first click. In some areas around me there is a law against it because of over filling and spillage. I have never seen it enforced though.

so does anyone know the hose I.D.'s by any chance. I'd like to just swing by the auto parts store on the way home, instead of running home then back out.

Illegal here in Oregon, too. And since Oregon still doesn't allow self-service, top-offs past the click rarely happen here.

Thanks, pete. From what I can remember there are two hose sizes on the top and bottom. I think the bottom one is 3/8ths and from memory I think the top is a 5/8ths. I wish their diagrams would say, but all it says is the length needed. Maybe I'll try calling the dealer, they always say "well you are going to have to bring it in for us to know what you are talking about"

74 gas smell on hard rh turns with full or 3/4 tank.

I get a strong fuel smell after filling up, or even with a 3/4 tank if i take a rh corner hard. I have opened the hood and the fuel door and not a whif of gas, or drips.

All new gas lines in back and up to the now front mounted pump.

I am mystified, (and concerned).

I don't mind replacing hoses and gas cap gaskets, strictly on an age basis, but i really would like to know where the gas is getting out.

Any advice appreciated,
chris

Check the fitting between hose item #49 and the gas tank itself in the picture above. Assuming you don't have any holes in your gas tank or leaks at the outlet near the fuel pump area at the bottom of the tank, the fuel sender/gasket area is the first point where fuel could come out if you fill your tank full. Next is the area I am referring to and finally the filler neck itself. Mine hose (#49) leaked like a river when the tank was full at this connection. Refer to this post. Holy Crap moment (Fuel smell source after fill up that goes away after 30 miles,id'd) To make a long story short in my case the hose (#49) size diameter was different at the gas tank than it was on the other end connecting to the white vapor box, so I ended up using a reducer. As a further precaution I now also only try to fill my gas tank 3/4 or little more, but not fully full.
Please take fuel smells serious....

I was getting the same fuel smell. I replaced all the fuel hoses, large and small whether they looked worn or not.... the smell is gone now.

Well, I just finish replacing all the little hoses to the expansion chamber (little white box in my picture), the fuel sending unit gasket and the gas cap gasket (which was really cracked). Went for a drive to the gas station and topped her off with my trunk open to see if anything leaked. NO LEAKS, NO FUMES, NO SMELL. I am a happy camper.

Now I am ready for my road trip this weekend to western Pa.
