74 911 Carrera? Need help identifying...

Need help identifying a 74 911, whether it's a Carrera and whether the flares were a factory option in that year?

I believe in 1974, they made a base model, an S, and a Carrera. I am thinking this would be a Carrera model because of the 44 designation in the serial number. The serial number is 9114400389 and the engine number is 6342138.

The rear end seems to have wide body flares on them. Was this offered as a factory option in this model year? If they were replaced at some point in it's life, it seems the entire rear quarter panel would have been replaced.

Look forward to everyone's feedback.

'74 911 Carrera

Yes, the rear flares were a factory item on that model. In fact, the front fenders were also slightly flared I think. The flares and the ducktail are the things that are unique about the '74 and '75 Carrera's. I think that they were the first 911's to have those as standard items and the first 911 to be called a Carrera. Actually there was a 1973 Carrera RS model but they are so rare that us normal folks have no shot at one!

I had a '74 Carrera Targa and the VIN was 911440032. Not sure of the engine number. There were only 256 of them imported to the USA...and I should have kept the damn thing. Hindsight is......................

Attached are a couple of pics.

Thats a '74 Carrera and # 389 out of 526 coupes.

These came with the normal front fenders and a Carrera flare in the rear. If you have a wide-body car, someone added those after it was manufactured. No such options before '78 for street cars. They could have used the early 930 steel flares (which were added to stock fenders) or the later fenders & quarter panels that incorporated them.

Steve, I know of one factory wide body 74/75 Carrera that was sold new to a Middle eastern customer and is now being restored in Germany.

It was a red car with White interior and gold 15" Fuchs. It is of course possible that it was a 'special wishes' car but the flares were factory welded, the same as
the early Turbo's.

here is the car at the factory before delivery.

Thanks for the feedback guys. They seem to be more of the wide body flares from the 78 street cars as you mentioned so at some point during the lifetime maybe these were modified and added on.

What were the standard size wheels front and back for the 74 Carrera?

Indeed, since the 930 didn't come along until '75 in Europe and '76 in the US.

Standard wheels were 6x15 & 7x15. A dealer installed option was 7x15 & 8x15.

Dealer installed option of the 8x15 fit within the standard carrera flares?

Yes. The late '74/all '75 Carreras had the same rear flares as a Carrera SC. The earlier '74 Carreras had rear flares like the Carrera RS from '73. They can fit 9" wide wheels with the right offset, the factory 8" wide wheels are no problem whatsoever.
