Gas Pedal Raiser-Upper

Here is one modification I made that I like and makes heel-and-toe downshifting a lot easier. Remove the pedal and screw the block of wood to the pedal with two screws (I used machine screws from the backside and countersunk two nylock nuts on the front. I added a piece of 3M self-adhesive (peel and stick) non-skid (hardware store) on the surface. It sure makes blipping the gas with the side of your foot a lot easier. (No comments about the underside of my dash.) Make sure you leave enough space on the bottom so that it doesn't interfere with the carpeting or floor mats if they bunch up.

Bringing this thread back to life in light of the new thread which is similar.

took an old round black relay apart that the coil had failed on and cleaned the contacts. Then used it to set the idle on my Carrera
bye closing the contacts and then opening them and matching the idle speed between the two positions. Cost 0 and much better drivability. Also took apart the idle valve and cleaned it with brake cleaner and reinstalled. Stopped the surgeing.

Great thread, great board. On my Black/ burgundy '88 Carrera:

1/ bottle of Techron and a good highway run away from traffic

2/ reroute the power wire immediately above the glovebox light and ditto under the front bonnet- have read of instances (plural!) of the hot bulb melting this wire which has ultimately cooked wiring harnesses

3/ bot a beautiful mahogany wheel w/ momo Porsche crest and matching knob on ebay- super deal but retained originals. Sharpened up the interior in a big way

4/ personal taste but removed (and kept) the whale tail to restore that classic silhouette- many compliments on this

5/ The usuals- shift bushings, leather care, good wax, tire pressure, join Pelican and PCA

6/ Anti fog inside glass and invisible wiper outside glass

7/ BEFORE YOU BUY--SPEND $$ FOR A PPI PRIOR TO PURCHASE AND TAKE YOUR TIME LOOKING!

8/ Most importantly, bot my 10 yr old son a Scalextric slot car- GT3 R and took him to a race club-- he loves his own Porsche- a great and safe hi-speed Porsche activity for father and son...

Low cost items:

1) Rewrapped my steering wheel and added a crest
2) Dyed my carpet back to OEM color
3) Dyed my seats
4) Repainted my targa bar
5) Painted the green headlight frames black
6) Hand painted my rim centercaps

Mechanically

1) Added pop off valve
2) Added mechanical stops to chain tensioners (in 1985)
3) Adjusted gas throttle linkage (added 10% or more travel)
4) Changed every rubber suspension bushing

Not cheap but the best two mods I've made to the car are

1) SSI exchangers with Dansk muffler
2) Bilstein sport shocks with 21/27 Weltmeister hollow torsion bars

This is a great thread, which will allow me to use my new Pelican discount on order > $150.

Pulled the front and rear turn light assemblies and freshened the interiors with a rattle can of chrome metalic. With the lenses on, they look much brighter. Also added new rubber gaskets.

Added new euro-style white front running lights inside my euro lenses with made some tin from Lowe's to create the housings and a couple of prewired bulb holders from the auoparts store. A little rewiring using the existing electricals - and they look great.

Used Forever Black to freshen the look of dull black rubber bits.

Stainless steel brake lines.

To smooth airflow under the car, especially after pulling the air-con crap leaving a big empty space, I fabricated out of tin a undertray cover extending from the front splitter back to the removable panel. Don't know the ultimate benefit, but it sure makes the front pan one clean surface.

I can see everyone's suggestions going into Wayne's next book - 101 cheap projects....

1. check & adjust tire pressure. Can make a world of difference at the track

2. tank of gas. Especially satisfying mod when the wife calls because "the damn car just died" - and she didn't notice the little red light on the gas gauge

3. brighter h4 bulbs (still under $100 even with relay rewiring)

4. built in garage door opener in blank switch panel

5. seat time

Voltmeter- Way less than $100- can save you $$$$$$$$ in repairs

After you've removed everything you can think of then install a inline bilge blower in the hole where the clock used to be. Very helpfull in the heat without a/c.

Hi Bento,

Can I ask a question in your wish list. Yuo mentioned "cheap mod" and "lowering your car". Can you tell me what is it involve in lowering your 911? Any part ne dto replace such as shock/strut as other cars? Or just adjustment?
Thanks.

acapella8 12-04-2005 11:48 AM

FrankyD -- can you post more details and perhaps a pic of your mod with the inline bilge blower??? Thanks...

Painted faded Targa Bar, 911SC engine cover logo and the formerly black but now gray front and rear window mouldings (lots of tape and newspaper). Including L & R trim pieces at base of side windows on top of door (outside). The car is a 79 targa.

Used Rustoleum 'Satin Black' which is indistinguishable from Wurth IMO.
