1990 PORSCHE 911 Carrera
Has anyone heard of any problems that are typical for this year, make, model?? I saw a post over a year ago on here (can not find it now) about a problem with the clutch or spring plate...something like that. Anyways, it seemed to be the most common problem that happened on a regular basis, is this true? If I recall, someone posted that until you fixed it with some kind of beefed up part, there was a possibility of it happening again. The fix wasn't cheap...12-1300 for parts not counting labor. I was looking for an earlier model for another project car (currently have a 75 911s) but decided to go with something a bit newer so I could skip all the upgrade stuff and have a daily driver. A buddy of mine is going through a big DEEEvorce and needs to get rid of his 90 911 before his wife's new Bo thinks it's a cool car and all he has left is check writers cramp.... I told him that I was here for him and interested..not in his wife, the car!!

Well if the price is right, just buy it.
The only problems I know the 964's had, were some leaked at the cylinders and the heads. Then the dual-mass fly wheel problem. But I don't know if it would apply to the C-4. The 964 board over at the Rennlist, is quite active. I would suggest asking them. How much is your buddy asking? |

Mike,
I think the biggest issue with this car is the potential for a leak between cylinder and head. Follow this link for more info. |

Mike,
Ditto on the cylinder leakage problem. It can be *expensive*. A few months ago I had the chance to buy a 3.6 motor of a similar vintage from a wreck. The motor was *very* leaky...from all the co$tly places. Many (but not all) of these cars had their engines repaired under warranty. You need to see the paperwork on any car you are thinking of buying.

Great!!
This is why I love this board and it's members wealth of knowledge....Will find out if it was repaired under Warranty. That's the one thing I remembered reading on this board"the Dual Mass Flywheel" I just couldn't remember want the exact name was. Thanks...
Makaio, I'm pretty sure I can pick it up for $20,000. |

Dual mass flywheel (see if it has been replaced with a LUK unit)
Leaky cylinder heads - evidently '90 was the worst year for this, and my wrench has said that he has seen cars that just couldn't be made dry. ymmv. broken distributor belt - you need a vent kit Other than that, you get a pretty nice ride with more hp, more comfort, and hvac that pretty much works. $20K is pretty good if it is reasonable mileage and condition. I have seen ads for higher mileage '90 cars below $20K in SoCal. |

I have to agree with nostatic (who by the way is becoming Pelican's defacto valuation expert on 911's based on the fact that he's probably test driven several hundred
), $20K is a decent price but nothing to get too excited about. There are others out there at this level.

How many miles doesw it have. Like the others have said, I have seen 964's with 100,000 miles go for $19,000.
Since your buddy doesn't want his ex'es new boy toy to have it, tell him you'll give $15,000.
