911 shift problem

Hi, Ron from Australia here.
Can anybody help?
I cannot get 1st gear in my 1984 911 carrera,
has anyone had a similar problem?

If its external, you might move the selector swivel in the back seat. Move the shifter back or to the right so you can get the line on the gear. Check 5th and reverse after adjusting.

Hi Ron,

Gday.

There is a shift coupler adjuster in between the passenger seats in the rear of the car. It may need adjustment. Have a read of the following technical article.

Pelican Technical Article: Shifting Improvements - 911 (1965-86) - 930 Turbo (1975-86)

The adjustment process is pretty easy, even I managed it.

Failing that it may be your reverse lock pin, this happened to me. However start with checking your shift coupler.

Cheers.

Shift lever and shaft components worn. Clutch adjustment/cable. What happens when you try to select 1st? Does it grind, does it feel as though it is engaging? Does the shifter feel "sloppy"?

A simple solution could be a worn bushing that supports the front part of the shift shaft control rod. Accessible after removing the shift housing. When mine broke (in two), I was w/o 1st and 2nd. Other worn bushings (shift lever and shift coupler) also contribute to this symptom.
