Front end squeaks
I've got a 1986 Targa that has a front end that's driving me nuts. All the rubber bushings appear to have been replaced at one time or another. They all seem to look fairly new. At least they don't look 25+ years old.
From time to time they start making noise that can be heard inside the car at anything under freeway speed. I've tried a dry spray lube that is supposed to work on rubber and sometimes it works....for a while. The only time they are really quiet is when it's raining. Anyone know what I can use, without taking everything apart, to quiet them? |

The rubber bushings may have been replaced with polyurethane or delrin bushings. These are often black and a casual look can make you think they are rubber when installed.
They squeak. The dry spray making the sound temporarily subside is another indicator that this is the problem. The solution is to replace with new OEM spec rubber or PolyBronze bearings.

Even though I haven't gotten my car on the road yet, I hear squeaks from my polyurethane front through-the-body sway bar bushings (on a '70) as I raise and lower it on the jack. As far as I know there's no source for OEM-style rubber for these. Chuck, any plans to remedy that?

Could be torsion bar caps, fairly common.
My 84 was squeaking crazy and would squeak every time I would drive over even the smallest of bumps!! Got worse to the point it was constantly squeaking and sounded like an old rusty gate swinging in the wind. Spraying silicone is only a very short term solution. I too thought it was bushes, but........ There are quite a few discussions if you search 'torsion bar caps' but basically (from memory) the caps are removed and part welded inside. When re-installed, this centres the steel torsion bar so it doesn't rub on the aluminum A arm which causes the squeak. I went the 'soft option' and got it done by my mechanic which was only a little over an hour's labour as I don't have access to a welder. Made the world of difference!! A cheap fix! |
