Valve to Piston clearance
I have a 73' 2.4 T motor. I bought S pistons, and have bought Reground "S" cams. Is it necessary to do a valve to piston clearance check? I wouldnt think so because of the crank having the same amount of throw.
Thanks Eric |

I suppose you could put it together and cross your fingers. It should be okay.
However, wouldn't the prudent thing to do, since S pistons and valves aren't exactly on the inexpensive side, would be to check how much clearance you have? I assume you're going to install the pistons and that means the heads will be off. When you get to that point, just install the #1 piston and check the clearance with its cylinder head. Lay down a thin strip of modeling clay on the piston tops and adjust valve clearance. Then remove and measure the clay. A close approximate cam timing setting should give you a pretty good idea of the clearance. This assumes all your deck heights are the same. For the extra couple of hours this operation will take, you'll have that warm, fuzzy feeling all is well between valve and piston. Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |
