CHT Guage routing
I know a few of you have installed CHT guages over the past few months. How / what path did you use to run the wire from the engine bay to the dash? I need to install a new aftermarket guage ( long Story ) and I can't readily see an easy path for the wiring.
Thanks

Well, I for one would have liked to have seen a reply to this, as I am about to do exactly this with the VDO guage.

Michael,
Which VDO gauge are you trying to install? If it is a traditional negative temperature coefficient resistive sensor ... as opposed to a thermocouple, then you can use regular copper wiring ... which shouldn't be done with thermocouples! I suggest using the existing 'option' wiring for the rear fog light ... which you will find folded up attached to the left rear tail lamp assembly, and behind the dash near the position for the fog lamp switch ... folded and taped. Here is the diagram ... the White/Green wire is not normally used on USA cars ... ![]()

I bought the VDO CHT kit. Included the wiring, looks like the thermocouple kind. Has a ring that goes under a spark plug. Had one of these on a CBX (inline six motorcyle). Discovered in that case that the middle plugs were not the hottest, the outboard ones were. Wonder which one is hottest on the 3.0.......
The unused wiring for the foglight won't work, but what a great idea. I do remember seeing it taped to the inside bumper. The harness supplied looks to be about 8 feet long. Am going to have fun threading this I think. Michael Krebs '80 911SC '83 944NA both Guards Red. If I have the decals, am I a member of the SCWDB club? I'll be thinking of my p-cars tonight as I am in command of the 3:45 departure from LAX to LHR. 11 hours and 26 minutes enroute. ![]() |

Michael,
With an 8-foot restriction, that doesn't sound like fun! I wonder if there is still a body opening punched in the '80 models for the 'old' speedo cable into the tunnel on the right side of the shift rod? Some of that split black plastic wiring loom tubing ... straight up the tunnel seems like a logical choice. Of course, you can extend the thermocouple with 'like' thermocouple wire ... any aircraft mechanic friends at LAX? They should have some extra Type-K thermocouple wire to spare! Just match the proper wire types ... Ni-Cr to Ni-Cr and Ni-Al to Ni-Al and you have a bit more freedom to run the wiring!
