Homemade splitter redux
 

Ok, so I was tired of sanding.

I went to the local surplus yard today and bought a sheet of 1/8" aluminum. Slapped down my template, and in about 15 minutes had my new splitter.

I made this one a little less aggressive, bringing it rearward about 2", or even with the oil cooler opening.

I still managed to screw up though - backing out of the garage, the untrimmed trailing edge caught an air line laying on the floor and ripped the bumper off. Grrr. I spent 2 1/2 hours putting *that* back together...
Investment in the aluminum splitter - a little under $13, plus some liquids for my friend Manuel Labor, who does all my metal work - he works cheap.

How did you affix it this time? And the big question - did it pass the Fitz highway test?

That looks familiar. One suggestion though. On mine I made two seperate pieces, one for each side and then made two of each. that way if your ever at the track and have an off or hit a curb it doesnt rip the whole thing off. I ripped the drivers side one off once and luckily it was just a matter of putting a another one on at the track.

What does the splitter do? Aerodynamics?

At speed, there is a high pressure zone that forms in front of the bumper and valance. This high pressure pushes down on the top of the splitter to create downforce.

ahhh, I see the light. Does this also help the flow of air through the openings instead of having the airflow directed below the splitter?

Mine is also in 2 pieces, primarily for portability. I plan to breed this pair now that they're in captivity.

Chuck - they're held on the same way, with big fender washers and grade-8 bolts. Yes, I know, the fiberglass is the weak link; I just used what I had laying around.

They passed the late-night Fitz-test, which consists of the Auburn Blvd ramp on 80 - a nice long, stretch, usually empty, with some gentle curves to it.
