Carpet question...

As part of my post rodent infestation clean up I am attempting to clean the carpets and trunk felt. They are all original and in good shape, but could use a cleaning. Is it prudent to use a steam cleaning machine to do the job? I believe the carpet to be Haargarn if that helps. Thanks.

I have a personal steam cleaner that I use all the time, with no problems. I would be careful with choosing the right detergent or cleaning solution, which could cause some irreversible problems.

I used to clean carpets with one of those Bissel cleaners that heated the water. They have an upholstery attachment, but you can rent a simllar machine if you don't have access to a similar one you an borrow. I found I could clean a carpet (indoor) as well as a commercial company, maybe better if you take your time. The thing I found out was you had to rinse the carpet two or three times. Not soak it, but rinse it as the machine instuctions call for. I quit using commercial cleaners in favor of a product named Folex, which is a wetting agent used for spot cleanup. It did as good or better job with no leftover fragrance & less residue. To do a proper job you need to remove the carpet, but that's your decision. In your case considering you had the rodent problem, I would seriously consider one of those solutions (for use in the machine) that removes pet odors maybe after you clean the carpet & it has completely dried. Have fun.
