wiggle my wheels!

I can take hold of three of my four wheels and wiggle them a bit from the outside. Two of them make clunking noise when I do so. There is no excessive steering play, the car does not pull either way, and the steering is great- even at speed. I do get a barely audible sonic resonance the first couple of feet of roll-off from a start (not brake or parking brake related). The car is an 87 3.2 with 80M. Wheel bearings? Tie rods? Something else?

Thanks

Sure sounds like wheel bearings. Pull the caps off the fronts and check them.
The washer behind the lock nut should be snug (able to move it with aid of a screwdriver) but not tight.

I had the same issue two weeks ago where i thought my front bearings were loose although i'd replaced them a few weeks prior, turns out when i changed the outer races i discovered that they were actually spinning in the hubs.

It was hard to diagnose as the bearings were not worn or anything but i could move my front wheels by grasping at 12 and 6 o'clock.Ended up sealing in the outer races with Permatex flange sealant for now until i get another set of front hubs.Seems to hold for now.
I've never seen that happen before ...

That cut my track weekend short as my brake pedal felt abnormally long due to the caliper and wheel movement !

Cheers !

Phil, bummer that your track event was cut short. Have you determined why the races where loose? Did a previous owner bugger ther hubs doing a bearing R & R or was the race undersize?

Dennis,

They were the hubs that came with the Timmins adaptor kit for my 996TT brakes ... they're from a 944 and were dated 79 so i would imagine they had lots of miles on them, couldn't get much help from Timmins either, guess the guy's too busy ...

Ask me where the three auto parts outlets are near Le Circuit Mont Tremblant and i'll be able to guide you ... lol
I have another used set on order from an 86 but that did cut my season short, especially since it didn't rain all weekend !

Cheers !
