1984 911 3.2 Targa needs help
Greetings from Alaska!
HAve a 84 911 3.2 purchased recently. Was running great until it stalled last week. Checked the forum and saw everyone saying a common issue for this model was the DME relay under the seat. I got that and it ran but now it idle's rough and misfires at 3k rpm, checked cap and rotor and i have spark and its clean. Today it just backs fire and has no power at all. Background on where i live, it rains alot and i dont have a garage, dont know if this matters. Any help where or common issues will be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance! Francis Kodiak, Alaska |

Sorry, man. I have a 84 Targa as well and it runs great. First thing I did when I got it was to buy a carport.

If the engine is damp it could be indication that spark plug wires need replacing, maybe moisture in the distributor cap.

I checked the cap and it wasn't damp. Worried that water leak got to the ECM under the seat. Rains a lot here. Covered it now.
Saw some posts about checking grounds and sensors so i will try to check those too. It ran awesome just before it stalled after putting 1k miles in it in 3 months with less than 100 miles of road system, so I was surprised. Thanks! |

+1 what Ed says - watch it run when it's very dark, sometimes you can see the arcing of the wires... OR, if you're up for it, run your hands all over the wires and cap while it's idling and if you get any shocks then the wires are bad :-)
Also make sure the inside of the cap is very dry, this can cause a misfire also. Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 340k miles |

Better double-check to make sure that water didn't get inside the ECU under the seat....
