Steering Wheel Stuck While Driving

Help! Every once in while my 79 911SC steer wheel gets stuck when turning to the right while driving. Turning further to the right frees the steering wheel. My mechanic thought it was loose oil lines but they have been secured. I did hit a curb stop with the wheel turned right which could have knock something out of alignment. The steering issues happens very infrequently so it is hard for me to diagnose. Any ideas?

Sounds like you may have chipped a tooth in the rack.
There would be a small piece of tooth floating around in the grease as well.
This is not the only solution to the problem...but I have seen it before....caused by the wheel hitting a curb while in the cranked over position.

Sounds like it could be extremely dangerous if it were to stick at the wrong time. I'd suggest not driving it until you identify and fix the problem.

I had this problem with my SC right after I got it. The problem was with the universal joints in the smugglers box. I just packed some grease in the joints and the problem went away.

I've read that if a car is lowered (probably beyond euro height), sometimes the steering shaft needs to be repositioned. Just another thought..

wow, my 930 just started doing this. It has been lowered recently too. At first there was a clicking sound when turning right, then it became hard to steer. After a bit of (slow) driving it suddenly freed itself up and was fine. The car had been sitting so I attributed it to that. Then a week or so later it was hard to steer again.

Steering issue solved!

I took my car to TRE to have a fresh look. The steering rack was being interferred with by an alarm horm which was not mounted and was loose under the front suspension pan. They reworked and secured the horn.
