Shipping Costs - This HAS to be a record
I live in Sydney Australia and I have the bug. Got my hands dirty trying to adjust fiddly rear drop links without a jack, stands etc. Am delving into the shift coupler tonight to track down an ominous 5th to 4th clunk (and I hope it starts and finishes with the shift coupler).
So off I go ebay-ing for a jack and stands, then register with Pelican Parts for the good stuff: Wayne's 101 projects - click Wayne's 911 engine rebuild - tick Wayne's jack pad - oh cr@p, not in stock, OK I'll add it to my "Project" Modest start, but one has to start somewhere. Go to checkout. Weight is 4 pounds for two books. A little heavy I thought but hopefully plenty of reading. Choose the el-cheapo delivery option, I'm in no hurry. $55 delivery!!!! Sorry Wayne. No Pelican deliveries to this little black duck anytime soon. For a comparison, Amazon will deliver for a smidge under $10. Phew. |

Have a close look at all your bushes in your coupler.
Better still, buy a WEVO PSJ from BWA Auto, improves the shift ALOT. Wish I was clsoer so I could help you with the adjustment. Its a spiritual process to get it right............ Have you got a STD shifter or a Short Shift Kit (Factory)? |

It's not Pelican per se. Flat rate shipping would be the same from who ever you bought from in the States.
International air shipping works on a convention ensuring you pay for volume and weight (the key is to minimise the amount of air you're paying for...). Amazon works differently using 'drop shipping' arrangements from manufacturers and suppliers which would be unrealistic for an automotive specialist supplier. In the good old days Pelican used to send small simple items like flat gaskets etc using regular USPS for just a few bucks without tracking. It would be great if they returned to that service, but alas the Antipodean isles (us in Oz and NZ) just aren't a big enough market to create the customer demand... plus the $$ value of a lot of purchases means most of us want tracking for insurance purposes. To decrease your costs, look at a bigger order that maximises the flat rate of the shipping or defray the shipping with others.

Hi Wasserkuhl
It actually is a Wevo PSJ and one of their short shift kits, too. Installed about 6 years or 30,000 kms ago, so suspect (hoping, praying) it's just up for a readjust. Pulled the cover off and had a look. It's as far as I'm game to go at the moment. Can you tell I'm new at this? Hi John, Yeah, if they could only offer the surface/no insurance/no tracking option for small inexpensive items. I'd pay the extra for the tracking and insurance for expensive kit, but not for a $19 Jack Pad ![]() It'd be an interesting exercise just to see what sort of following Pelican has down under. Probably just as you imply - we are but a gnat on the backside of a bull ![]() Last edited by Tigrah; 10-08-2012 at 12:30 AM.. |

Another option is to chip in with a few like minded pelicanites in your area. There is an Australian regional forum you might want to ask if anyone is putting an order in.
My project list is very long, trouble is I have too many projects on the go atm. Parts sitting around in bags from a few months ago. Cheers Ed. |

I'll probably sound like a fanboy
![]() Don't forget to price check with Porsche Australia as occasionally they are actually reasonable... A big order shared with others is the best way to save.

Hi Tigrah, have had the same issue myself and found shipping from LA to Cairns ,Australia (where I live) to be atronomical to say the least, I found that if I ordered say one oil filter and shipping was approx $18.00 and then I added another it would also double the shipping to $36.00 making it uneconomical to purchase, I then took it up with Pelican asking how was all the International freight calculated, Pelican`s reply to me was to see what I needed first and then email them with the parts and they would check for the shipping cost,lo and behold I bought 3 oil filters and with shipping to Oz came to a total of $45.00 Au ,(2011) the up side is that while shipping can be expensive ,the information is invaluable and I have saved $$$$$$$ thousands Au in labour with the unbelievable amount of experience and knowledge offered for free, this will make up many times over the short fall in extra shipping cost, also I have a cheap spare Ex cond used short shift if needed. Welcome, have a sense of humor , enjoy the vast natures and indvidualism of this club who will go to endth degree to keep your 911 on the road.
Cheers from the Sunshine State, Cairns NQ Brett L |

If you contact them prior to shipping they will use different shipping methods. I had the same trying to order Mitch's steering bushing, the shipping was $55 or so for what I remember as a $30 part. They offered flat rate shipping if I contact them directly instead of a web order, but that's only for certain parts

I have just ordered:
Inner Rocker Panel (Reproduction), Right, 911 (1965-89) Inner Rocker Panel (Reproduction), Left, 911 (1965-89) Torsion Bar Cover and Seal Set (Reproduction) (2 per car, sold individually), 911 (1965-86) Jack Receiver Tube (2 per car, sold individually), 911 (1974-89) Brand: Genuine Porsche Jack Receiver Plate (Reproduction) (2 per car, sold individually) sold individually, 911 (1965-86) The checkout advises that the shipping weight is 59lb, and freight is going to be $US325 to NZ My firm recieves stuff (not car bits) from the states pretty much daily, so will be doing some comparisons once it comes in, for example we usually get 20lb parcels for $US55 or so by air. |

I just got nailed by Sway-A-Way on shipping costs. I ordered 2 screws for $4.70. Shipping costs were $12.93.
Amazon is the only company holding down shipping costs. They also carry a lot of Porsche parts now. Most Porsche dealers give you 20% off just because you walked in the door. I won't be ordering anything from Sway-A-Way for a while. Richard Newton |

Ha, I went through this shock when I liven in Sydney. I thought it would be better when I moved to Canada. No such luck.
I've found avoiding UPS, Fedex and DHL and using USPS the best. Some vendors are more willing to offer that than others, and the USPS has their own limitations on package sizes.

I have nothing but good things to say about ordering from Pelican, ~but~ I think they have a bug in their shipping calculator...
I too have seen shipping costs go screwy, like $50 more for just adding the 101 projects book or something like that. When it happens I drop the last item and live without it if I can, or break the order into two shipments. Maybe once Wayne signs the book it becomes invaluable and the costs to insure the shipment go thru the roof? :-) Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 340k miles |

It's a big issue. I recently shipped a 33 lbs package to Victoria Australia and the best rate was thru US Postal Intl. Priority for $175.00 USD. For comparison FedEx, UPS, DHL ranged from $260 to just under $500.
