5th Gear, a British car show better then Top Gear

This has recently returned on to US TV on Velocity and I enjoy it more the British Top Gear. (I'm not even gone to mention the US one. Is that canceled yet?) The same attention to details, beautiful photography and great cars without the over the top Benny Hill gags of the Top gear show that made reach for the remote. Yes, the one guy (Tiff?) judges every car by his ability of get the car drifting. But he's still light years better then Tanner Foust.

Good show, as you say better than Top gear.

5th gear has been around for years and Tiff Needell started with Top Gear. I like the crew of Tiff, Vicki Butler Henderson and Jason Plato, which by the way races in the BTCC. They are all certainly better drivers than the Top gear crew but nowhere near as funny.

Top Gear in my opinion is the better of the two and we in England favor Top Gear as well. I must say that I do not like the U.S. version of Top Gear as they COPY everything from across the pond and they do not do it very well. Maybe they should come up with their own ideas ???

I agree that Tiff is WAY better than Tanner ! Tiff use to race with Derek Bell and Nick Faure on the Rothmans Porsche Team. Very accomplished race car driver to say the least.

Every once in a while you'll see a glimmer of the old Top Gear in the latest episodes. But as much as I don't like how goofy Top Gear has become, the silliness came about in an effort to appeal to a wider audience. And what do you know? My wife likes to watch it.

Like em both, they're different shows. Haven't seen a new Top Gear in many months after I finally worked my way through them all from the beginning (both shows). I get them both via Netflix. All the hosts are much older now so of course they evolve. US Top Gear is invisible. Its all entertainment when the cars cost well north of $100k.

I have to respectfully disagree about Fifth Gear as I don't think they're anywhere near as entertaining nor informative as Top Gear. The hosts lack charisma, seem to be too gray haired, and don't really gel onscreen. I wouldn't even put them in the same league as Top Gear, other than its filmed in the UK and has some cars around. I did not see this coming that anyone would even like the show, but to each their own!!!

I like car shows that focus on cars. I saw more car driving and facts in an episode of 5th gear then a season of Top Gear. Besides Clarkson is a pompous *ss

even though Clarkson hates 911s (but both may and hamster loves them and both owns one), i still prefer Top Gear UK. the other shows including TG US may be more informative or have better reviews but they are dull and boring in comparison.

For serious machine stuff , watch Alain De Cadenet's "Renaissance man".
The two "gear" programs are to me like waiting room mags. OK , but only for when you've got nothing better to do!

And re the TG kill a Porsche segment , I think it was a rusted out terminally MOT failured 912?

Chris Harris on the YouTube drive channel is my current favourite. It's very good.

I don't think Clarkson hates Porsches. It's just sort of British-tongue-in-cheek humor. Leno has stated the same sort of 'I'm not into Porsches' things a few times-yet he was one of the few to purchase a Carrera GT. Casual one timers don't get the opportunity to buy such a machine. You've got to be a 'friend of the factory' so to speak. I guess it's posh to say 'I hate porsche'-- haha- those funny rich guys!!

Fifth gear is more factual than entertaining, Top Gear is king of dreamy challenges, over the top races, and amazing show-man-ship. Top Gear changed the game of car journalism period, all the others are playing catch-up. I like fifth gear but common? How can you not love "the Jezza"?

Question: How the heck is cheesy motorweek still allowed to be aired on TV?

My favorite car show by far is a Japanese one. Best Motoring. It is hosted by former racer (and LeMans winner), driver extrordianire and "Drift King" Keiichi Tsuchiya. It's my favorite because A) the cars are the stars B) Lots of exciting track racing/testing and road testing. As in flat out on a closed road testing. Just the best!!!

And the hosts on the show rather enjoy 911s!!

Does anyone really believe anything that Jeremy (or the other two for that matter) say when he/they are in character?

Taking his comments seriously reminds me of the people in Britain that got their knickers in a twist over this:

No, really? Top Gear admits that the caravan fire was a hoax

Watched the 5th Gear episode with my teenage son last night that demonstrated the various stability management control system. The demonstration on the the swerve without the system and the resultant roll made a big impression on him. It was a nice DE.

Alain de Cadenet is the most famous accomplished driver no one's ever heard of or knew he was there... He used to host a series about famous makes, only to include himself in all of the marque's racing ventures, but with no results? I can't really call him out as a poser, but it's almost akin to calling Simon Cowell the best music manager in history prior to American/Pop Idol (in UK) even though he too seems to be everywhere... I don't get it with these British guys, but then again, somehow I ended up marrying a gal from the UK - go figure! (But for what it's worth, de Cadenet as a successful racer back in the day and how ofetn/highly regarded he holds himself out to be - really, really?)... Your thoughts?

de Cadenet was a privateer that drove cars entered by his own team in an era when major sponsorship was taking over, driving the privateers out of major events.

Why does Clarkson have eye liner on in that pic?
