'81 Targa Bar Finish

I know its Satin Black, but is it supposed to be smooth or textured? Seem to remember seeing it both ways? Mine's textured now, but getting repainted so I want to correct this if necessary. Thanks.

This is a good question. I remember reading in the way-way-way back that you could buy paint from Porsche for the Targa top.

My 81 was kind of textured as well before I refinished. Hard to describe. Kind of like there was a texture spray of little snotty stuff then a final spray over the top.

My 79 is textured. I have no reason to believe it has ever been refinished.

Wasn't able to turn anything up definitive on the PCA website. Mine was textured when I got the car back in '86 and also have no reason to believe it had been repainted. Thanks.

It is somewhere between satin and crinkle, but closer to satin. Black paint from Wurths in a rattle can is your best bet.

I have a 1984. I think that mine was smooth before I re-finished it. I took off the targa bar and chemically stripped and wet sanded down to bare metal. I used the Wurths primer and black satin rattle can paint because it was recommended by other posters. The resulting finish is textured. I think that it has to do with the primer, which I believe was an "etching" primer.

Here's a shot of the texture on mine. Looks like splotching from uneven spray dispersal?

Just finished stripping and painting my bar cover with many coats of black and clearcoat lacquer. Wet-sanded, compounded and polished it has an amazingly deep shine, which looks great to my eye contrasted with the vinyl top. YMMV ...
