Another Cop Story - this one good!
After spending 15+ hours working on the LeSchander engine drop/re-install this weekend (Richard can post the details on that since it's his car!) I needed some quality seat time in my 911.
Got up early this morning and hit the backroads here in NoVa hard for some spirited driving. At one point I found myself cruising at 70 (in a 55 zone) on a long straight with no one in my lane of travel. A car was approaching me heading in the opposite direction but by the time I realized it was an unmarked cop it was too late. As he passes me he RAISES HIS HAND AND WAVES!!!! I almost drove off the road in disbelief and kept looking in the rear view mirror for him to hit the lights and turn around. For all I know he might have been off duty but none-the-less it was still nice to experience given the some of the recent posts about cops. Happy motoring!

I have a copy of a "Warning" ticket here at the office. Got it riding a GSXR-750 one day. I noticed a car far, far ahead of me. Two-lane, no crossroads, only I will be hurt if I wreck, so I go ahead and apply wrist action.
Huge fun, flying along, then whattayaknow, over a very slight rise there he is, slowing down and waving me over. I was, of course, very polite: off bike, sidestand, helmet and gloves, left hand open s jacket to show inner pocket, right hand with forefinger and thumb only to remove wallet... He told me to slow down, but I think he understood that if you are gonna speed, you are perhaps less likely to get the ticket if you pick your location carefully, so that nobody else is involved should any stupidity occur. Lucky, and wiser! John

That reminds me of another 'good' cop story. Many years ago I was SCREAMING through Oregon on a motorcycle, having just crossed into that fine state from California. I got stopped and the OSP Trooper was a little exasperated, asking me "Do you know how fast I had to go to catch up with you?" I was appropriately contrite, and I happened to mention that I had been driving like that for about half the length of California. Clearly, he enjoyed this comment and mentioned that troopers are a little tougher in Oregon. Told me to slow down, that he would radio ahead to other officers to keep an eye out for me. After the first corner, throttle position resumed and I saw no other troopers.

Great luck on that one, Doug. Which road did that happen on?

Jim - it was on RT 15 outside of Leesburg at about 7:30 am on Sunday morning. Let me know if you are ever up for a drive b/c there are plenty of great roads in Loudon County!

Good cop story? My VERY first night with a driver's license, age 16, plus one day. Driving dads '56 Buick...a guy ran a stop sign, clipped the front of the Buick...minor bumper damage to the old Roadmaster. Luckily for me, a local cop was behind the stop sign runner. I'm standing there in tears, knowing Dad would NEVER let me drive again. After citing the other driver, the cop turned to me, and said: "Would you like me to write a note to your
Dad, telling him it wasn't your fault?" ![]() |

I really want to do a NoVA cruise. But you guys should not want me to come along. I attract trouble wherever I go. I am a cop magnet, even when I'm behaving myself and despite the fact that my car is black and not guards red.
I think we're gonna finish buttoning up my car tomorrow night. It should not take long. I just have to get the cv's back together, put the muffler back on, find out which elec. connection we missed and then I'm gonna give her a good hard workout. With any luck I can talk my girlfriend into doing the rally with me next weekend. But I think her patience for my Porsche habit has worn thin throughout this clutch job.

For you No VA guys - I had a really funny close call yesterday. Morning rush hour traffic, entering the beltway from the 123 south ramp in Tysons Corner. The ramp is close to a 150 or 160 degree, right turn, decreasing radius - - - great fun to late apex the turn and come blasting out on to the beltway merge lane in third and merge into traffic accelerating to red line.
Well, yesterday, as I come out of the corner and got staight in the merge lane, I see a blue car in the corner of my eye, he is in the right hand lane going fast, real fast. I keep my foot in it, shift to fourth, still keeping my foot in it. I finally merge into the right hand lane right behind this newish blue Chevy Luminarie or some big model; we're doing about 80. As I get behind him, the blue lights start flashing in his rear window. CRAP! I lift immediately . . . . . . . . . and watch as he moves two lanes to the left, accelerating . . . . . . and gets behind a Mish 3000GT and pulls him over. The cop had obviously been tracking the 3000 from the open right lane. Fortunately, when I was doing my accelerating, I was in his blind spot. Luck, just plain luck. - Chuck ![]() |

I've got a good one ...
The day before Christmas Eve 1983 I'm driving from Melbourne, Victoria to Sydney, NSW to spend Christmas with my girlfriend (now my darling wife of 17 years). I'm a Yank in Australia renting a BMW 5 series car for the drive and spending my first Christmas away from home (as well a my first summer-time Christmas). I leave Melbourne bright and early, heading north on a great expressway. Traffic thins out as the city and suburbs recede in the rear view mirror, so I decide to check out what the BMW can do. As I begin to put my foot into it, I see an orange Ford sedan clipping along at a high rate of speed just at the edge of my forward vision. Needless to say, the pursuit was on! Within a matter of minutes, I was rapidly approaching the target, and settled in behind the Ford at 90 mph. This was only momentary, though, because I decided to pass the Ford and show him what a fine piece of German enginering could do! I tromp on the gas, swing it over to the right (drive on the left in Australia) and pass my "victim" with a casual glance over to his vehicle. It's at this point I see an embroidered patch on the two gentlemen's shoulders boldly proclaiming "Victoria State Police" and realize my rear view mirror has been filled by a second ugly orange Ford (did I mention my sudden dislike for orange Fords?) with that driver motioning me over to the side of the road. Guilty as hell, I complete my passing maneuver, indicate my intentions and pull over to the side of the road with the two Fords lined up behind me. I roll down my window, hang my head and wait for the onslaught from the single approacing officer. He smiles, pauses, says "G'Day, license please" and waits for me to hand over my documents. When he sees a New York State driver's license, he chokes back a curse, turns to the other officers and says "ya got yourself a tourist". He proceeded to rip into me for my reckless actions and disregard for the rules, how he could take me to the station and lock me up over Christmas (explaining that to my girlfriend / now-wife would have been seriously detrimental to our future!!) and fine me heavily. He hands back the license to me, smiles again and says "Merry Chritmas ... get out of here and keep it UNDER THE LIMIT!" I couldn't believe I heard what he said and thanked him profusely!! He waved me on and I got out of there quickly (naturally, staying under the 100 KPH limit)!! I drove rather sedately for the rest of the day until hitting the New South Wales state line. Once again, feeling full of myself, I began to get rather spirited with my driving. Coming around a long sweeping turn I pass a NSW police officer heading the opposite direction ... but not for long, as witnessed in my rear view mirror. Same drill, same lecture, same results ... I couldn't believe my luck!!! I realized tempting the fates once more would be a total disregard for the blessings bestowed upon me that day, so I found the first motel I could, got a room, found a cold beer and thanked my lucky stars! Nice police officers in Australia ... if you've got a Yank accent and the tourist papers to get away with it! Cheers,
