real RS ducktail?? steel and fiberglass
I posted this question on another Porsche forum and thought I'd ask the experts here...is this a genuine RS ducktail? I've done a fair bit of reading up on them and was hoping to find someone with some first hand experience. From my reading most replicas were all fiberglass. This tail has been on the car for a long long time-I highly doubt someone was making replica steel/fiberglass replicas back in the 70s but I'd like to hear some opinions. It's on my orange 73 911T although the tail appears to have been white at one time. I've done a fair bit of reading on these-most ducktails don't appear to have any numbers. Also, this one is made with an inner steel and outer fiberglass. It appears very well made-no sloppy fiberglass, etc. It appears that the latch has been crudely messed with at one time and the 2.4 badge has been put on there but everything else looks like the photos I've seen of factory ducktails. Whatcha think??

I don't think so.... I think the original has the steel section (that holds the latch) curves up into the tail section to mate with the fiberglass tail. Or, does this tail have that? I can't tell from your pics.

I believe the '73 RS tails had an aluminum frame, but the later factory ducktails had a steel frame. Get us a pic of the weave of the fiberglass, that's usually a good indication also.
Here are some pics of Freddie Hernandez refurbing a genuine factory tail. Welcome to VINTAGE SPORTSCAR RESTORATIONS Welcome to VINTAGE SPORTSCAR RESTORATIONS |

probably real. The factory started with aluminum bases/ fiberglass tops and kept them in production for the RS thru March 73, then switched to the steel base. Sporadically after that some G series IROC and RS 3.0 tails would get aluminum bases
Would like to see different angles of the curved latch support and close up of the fiberglass weave inside the tail. Factory fiberglass was pretty rough
