Shift Knob Removal - Any Trick To It?

How the heck do you get the shift knob off an SC? I have nice new one to put on. I've tried several variations of pulling and twisting - but to no avail. Is there a trick to this? Is it, by chance, a crushed sleeve installation thereby rendering it virtually impossibe to remove? It doesn't feel threaded. I don't want to reef the whole darn linkage out of the tunnel!

sometimes the crush sleeve is basically frozen to the shift lever, and the knob will break into pieces before it comes off.

I wouldn't use a Crescent wrench...a regular open-end wrench is better. Pounding a Crescent wrench might break it.

Be careful when pounding -- if you miss while swinging the hammer, damage (to you or the car) might result. Also, the knob sometimes flies off, so you might consider putting a towel over it while you're pounding.

When I removed my shift knob, I used a dead blow hammer with an open-end wrench (15mm?). Worked pretty well, IIRC.

I've been having the same problem,
All I want to do is put on a leather boot on my shifter, should I do this or take out the entire shifter? How do you do that?

See if you can find a lace-up boot that won't require any disassembly.

Throw a towel over it before you wack it. So you have less chance of launching it through your windshield or fore head.

looks like an opportunity to produce a special tool. a slide hammer with a fitted fork that supports the bottom of the knob well enough to not scar or break it. every shop should have one.

you would have to take out the whole shifter and partially disassemble it. it is not that hard and directions are in the 101 projects book and various shop manuals. I'd do that before trying to get the knob off with anything other than your hand.

Thanks, I have some books i'll look through.

But I would try not cutting off the knob if possible, they do sell for $100 to $200!

May I insert a product plug?
Yet Another Shifter Thing

One method involves removing the shift knob as described above.

Another method avoids potentially destroying an expensive knob by cutting the lever and inserting a splice extender.

Ok, I resurrected this thread because I can't seem to get the shift knob off of my 1987 Carrera. I saw somewhere that the G50 shifter did not need a crush ring to install a new knob. Do you do something besides "beat" it off the shifter? I don't want to cut or destroy anything to get it off. Help?

Doesn't the G50 knob have a set screw under the emblem?

Yes, carefully pry off the emblem on G50 shift knobs.
