Windshield Install / Bottom Center Tips?
 

I've got a windshield install coming up and want to avoid an issue I recall from a previous install a few years back.

The problem was that the bottom center of the seal between the vents did not pull over the lip. The cord was overlapped at the bottom and everything seemed to be going well but looking back the seal had not pulled over that spot. That area isn't really visible with the dash right up against it.

Any thoughts?

Advice needed is focused on that one area. The rest of the set up procedure is not an issue. Seal on window, trim in seal, cord in groove etc is not a problem.

I sure would like to avoid running into that same issue.

I've read where others have wrapped a thinner cord around the seal 2 times instead of just once.
The first wrap gets the seal started everywhere and then the second one can be pulled carefully while shfting and pushing the glass as needed to ensure the lip gets seated correctly.
Haven't tried it myself as one wrap worked for me, but it seems logical that it would work.

I removed the two plastic vent covers to see the bottom of the seal and then used a puller made out of an old antenna mast in the shape of a long z to catch the bottom edge of the seal to pull it over the edge.

+1 on double wrapping thinner cord. I actually used the nylon cord used in your common or garden weed whacker / strimmer whatever you clal it in the US. Double wrap finishing with loose ends at the top of the screen works a treat.

+2 on the double wrap with a thinner cord. Plus at the vent you cannot relax the tension on the cord when you have to manipulte the cord to get around the vent cutout edges.

The sc has two vents, and i had the same challenge. Took me 7 tries to get it right.

For what it's worth I worked as an auto glass installer for 3yrs back in the stone age and have installed many rubber seal type glass. I have R/R the front and rear glass on my 66 911 twice so far in my restoration.
I always have used a cotton rope approx 1/4" dia. Thinner cords don't pull up enough of the gasket to overlap vents or other obstructions/imperfrections in the pinch area. The larger rope brings more of the gasket into play for a longer time as up pull the cord out. I aslo never touch the rubber gasket with anything made of metal. If you are going to massage/manipulate the gasket us plastic tools, places like harbor frieght have them for little $, smooth the edges on them and you can work along the edges to help set the seal if needed.

++ on double wrap of cord, just did this myself and I noticed the 2nd wrap seemed to make everything fit better. Also, make sure the whole windshield and seal does not sit too low when placed in the opening. It's somewhat heavy and tends to want to slide down towards the trunk lid direction,which makes the bottom lip have to really "reach" to get over the metal lip.
