Sunroof got jammed.... worth fixing or just be happy I got it to close?
So last night I tried opening my sunroof and it moved back about 2" and then got jammed. Wouldn't slide open anymore, would only close a slight amount and didn't look to be cockeyed. After a bunch of fiddling I got it to pop back closed on it's own. Appears to be shut all the way although I'm a little concerned it might leak.
I've got Wayne's book and have looked at the sunroof adjustment posts. My question is... is it worth it to try and fix or am I more likely to screw up my decent headliner and cause more issues messing with it? To me the sunroof is a "nice to have" but not a "need to have" kinda thing. Any ideas of what might be happening if it only makes it back a couple inches? I think the cables are ok since I was able to get it to close on it's own. Thanks. Chris

Where is your sense of adventure?
![]() In all seriousness, I would attempt to get it fixed. I thought there was a zipper in the headliner for just this purpose? Best of luck. I am sure there are some experts here that will be able to walk you right through this.

The zipper in the headliner is what scares me the most.... if I unzip it will I be able to zip it back up without tear the headliner?

A good headliner spray on treatment will also lube the zipper.....

Ah perfect post link... thanks!
Sometimes there is TOO much info (meaning posts) to sort through. The pics in this one show how simple is really is. Now finding the time is another story.....

I followed jhubs instructions on my 88 with this problem. Very good instructions and pictures.
Blue tape comes in handy, recommend it! all in all I'm guessing it took about 3 hours start to finish.Be sure to slide the inner sunroof panel in BEFORE you re-install the rails,be sure to watch out for the two white plastic(nylon) locator pins at the rear end of the rails toward the back window.Good luck with it ! |

...the headliner wasn't strong enough where the zipper starts. Zipping it back closed was never a problem. You may want to push a pin thru, near the zipper start, to give counter force to the unzipping. (maybe) Lube certainly could help.

Actually, come to think of it, you shouldn't have to unzip to get to the (likely pulled-out) cable end. You can take the roof panel out w/o going to the s/r motor.

Had a wild hair after reading more of the post below and sure enough, pulled my sunroof apart last night and got it FIXED... yeah me (and this site of course!). Turned out the leading edge of the roof was getting snagged on the air deflector but I pulled it all apart anyway to clean up the sagging roof panel headliner, replace a missing screw and lube everything up. Didn't replace the seals but probably should as there is a slight gap on one corner.
Kudus to this link and the pics.... made it a breeze and not nearly as scary as first imagined. Sunroof cable repair and new seals 87 911

In looking back at your problem source, what exactly was the issue? (why was it snagging?).
Also, could you have repaired this without taking the sunroof out/apart? THANKS! Doyle
