Will they fit?

Will early volkswagen headlights fit SWB 911/912 fenders? if not will 356 headlights? I want early early style lights on my car (68) but can't afford legit early PORSCHE lights. I'm not a purist so the subtle differences won't bother me.

They will fit but you will have to drill a hole in the fender right below the light (6 oclock position) for a bolt or screw on the holding flange as shown in your picture.

It may fit if the tab is bent forward. It interferes with the sheet metal below the bucket otherwise. Another thing (which may not concern you) is that the early VW headlight assemblies (pre- 68) seem to be much heavier (at least relatively so).

I've got a pair of VW assemblies, H4s and a spare fender at home. I'll post pics later.

If you use the European VW fluted lenses you can simply swap the lens' into the H4 assemblies. Otherwise you can use the clear NA lenses with fluted 7" lamps.

Here's a view of the VW headlight assembly just placed in the opening:

Below is a blurry image showing how far I could get the assembly into the bucket. Just before the tab interfered with the surrounding sheet metal, the headlight assembly was interfering with the mounting tabs inside the bucket (which hold the sugar scoop style headlight assembly in place). I could kind of sneak the running light parts around the bottom headlight mounting tab (see bottom pic).

This picture is of a standard H4 headlight assembly with the early clear VW lens. This setup needs a fluted lamp or fluted Euro lens'.

Just for fun, here's the VW headlight assembly with the H4 lens:

Just for reference, this is the back side of the VW headlight assembly:

Hi Steve,

Sorry, I need some parts from these H4s for my car. They may be available from our host or from the classifieds section (http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/)

tb,

No problem. I should say though that I believe the VW lens' I have (Hella SB 19/20/21) were common to the early 911/912 as well. There were other VW lens' with other markings, but I don't know much about them beyond that.

It doesn't look like our host carries parts for the early headlight assemblies, so here's a source:

They certainly are. The mounting tabs don't look to bad at all.

Original early SWB look ?

Quaz (Kevin),

Interesting work you did on the headlights, was considering the same route and found your thread.

I am starting from scratch on a1966 coupe that has the fender metal only.

Unlike you I dont want a customized looki but the authentic early USA look.
So I buy the VW repro for the US (with the clear glass) + original chrome rings + original sealed beams (w fluting)?

Do I need a separate mount to couple the sealed beams to the rear of the assy bucket?

Thanx
