Tips on polishing Fuchs?

What products do you use to polish your Fuchs?

I've tried a couple of different products but I haven't found anything better than Blue Magic, a Mother's sponge cone attachment for my drill and a lot of elbow grease. Mine seem to have a tendency to get hazy. Blue Magic seems to hold the haze a bay for a while.

Anybody have any other ideas or suggestions? I'd love to know how the pros do it. :D

Here's a pretty slick article.

Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish. Little tub, around five or six bucks... needs a little elbow grease but the results are fantastic. Gotta wear shades fantastic. An easy way to use it is keep the wheel on the car and rotate it while you keep the applicator/polish rag steady.

Obviously you understand that Fuchs are normally anodized and polishing can destroy the coating?

tirwin 10-23-2012 04:54 PM

My Fuchs are polished, not anodized.

I'll have to try it. Thanks!

Good article but it seems more oriented to paint prep. Would 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper be safe for just polishing?

canamfan 10-23-2012 05:10 PM

I too keep going back to using Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish, I've tried Peek, Never Dull & Flitz all of which are pretty good but usually more $$, I like Mother's creamy like smoothness & consistant glimmering  results for the price/amount.

I use Mothers and then wash the black residue off with soap and water, instead of rubbing it off.
Much easier and they look like mirrors.
I figured if it washes off your hands with soap and water, it washes off the rim with soap and water.

It's very fast that way. Been doing it for years.

My right hand and a large tub of Vaseline and plenty of paper towels.

Looks like Mothers is the hands-down favorite!

Nice shiny rims guys! :)

Definitely Mothers mag polish and their power cone for your drill. They worked wonders on my Fuchs.

I'm a momy's (Mothers) boy too. Been using it for 10 years and have the black fingers to prove it!

I'm a "pro" and I use Blue Magic and/or Wenol depending on the job.

I'll sometimes use #0000 steel wool with the Blue Magic.

I find that the Wenol will make the final polish slightly brighter than the Blue Magic. Especially on brass era cars.

I also wax any raw metal after polishing to help slow the oxidation.
This is kind of a moot point with regards to the Fuchs as most will use a wheel cleaner and strip any wax on the next wash...

My $.02

Cooper,

Interesting.... Is there a particular kind of wax you use?

I thought that before posting, but he goes into what he did to get such a good polished surface. It's really an article on how he took blah wheels and refurbed them in his garage. Even Harvey congratulates him.

"I used a 220 Grit sandpaper for the dings/scratches and then worked up to 1500 grit for polishing, then rubbing compound, then Never Dull for the finale’."

a lot more consensus on this thread than in the Oil thread. :D

Cooper911SC 10-24-2012 10:48 AM

@Tirwin,
Any wax will do.

I use either Klasse All in One, which is an acrylic based synthetic or I use Wenol "Hartwachs" which is a blend of their mild polish with a carnauba based wax.
