1984-1989 911 Carrera article / Best 911 ever?
does anyone have a copy of this article? I can't remember if it was in car and driver or road and track but it was back in the late 90's. One of the best articles written on what to look for in purchasing of these cars built from 1984-1989 and even covered approximate repair costs for valve jobs, etc....
Help anyone. please let me know if you have access to it. thanks! john

I've got a copy of it somewhere. It's the very same article that inspired me to buy my 89 coupe. It basically uses the 3.2 as a balance between the earlier, less appointed cars compared to the later, more optioned vehicles (964, 993). Where that exact line is subject to opinion. (which, undoubtedly we will now have).

you got it!
you hit the nail right on the head. I bought my '86 carrera for the exact same reason you bought your '89. I just love my car and for some reason all the "new" porsche drivers look over as if in envy of the "classic"

In my biased opinion the 84-89 series are going to be wonderful affordable classic porsches appreciated more and more as a great balance of features and maintainability(is that a word?) Gordon.

hahahaha Zonas, I was just going to post the same article. I still have it from my 9th grade car nut files.
That is the reason I wanted an 84, as opposed to an 87. Besides, I love the 915 transmission from my 911SC days. |

Zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds?
32 mpg ave. for the highway? Is someone abusing their poetic license here? ![]() ![]() ![]()

32 mpg highway was the EPA figure, which, although official, was (is) unrealistic.

Still a great article, even if the EPA estimates are as far off as they are today for Hybrids.

You'd have to really beat on your 3.2 to get 0-60 in 5.3 secs. But then as a R&T or C&D test pilot who cares?

There was an article a few years ago in Excellence that proclaimed the '87-89 911 the best ever.
I don't know I got a low mileage SC (black, coupe, sunroof delete, 84K miles) for $12K which is about $10K less than a G50 Carrera would sell for. For the money I'd rather stick with the SC and $10K in my pocket. |

I just done a 300 miles road trip through mountainous areas, and I got 28 mpg on the round trip. Speeds in the 55 to 70 range. 84 carrera.

Awesome article! I get 20 mpg but with several blasts up to 90 and some spirited acceleration up to 70 on each tank. I cant imagine driving so granny-like to get 28 mpg.

guys,
are these great cars or what? 20 plus miles per gallon and that beautiful design? I don't know about you but I have only had to replace an alternator and brake booster after 124k miles. I just put a new M&K muffler on it with a fabspeed premuffler and this car could not get any closer to sounding like an old RS. What a dream this 3.2 has been!

Thats a good article, but not the one he's looking for. The one he's looking for came out in the late 90's.

From Road and Track under the "Used Car Classic" section. Still have the pages at home tucked in my Sept. 2001 issue of Excellence (the issue that had that silver SC with gray Fikses)
Try searching on their site, otherewise I could scan it if you like. P |
