rear bumper alignment on a SC

Hi everyone,
After 2 long hood cars we are proud owners of an 83 911SC cabriolet with 53,000 miles. Glad to be back in the Porsche world and this great group.
The question I have is that my rear bumper is off amost 1/2 an inch from driver to passenger side. The seal above the bumper you can place a finger in the gap while on the driver side its closer to 1/2 a finger. I have searched the forum but have not found a process to get to and adjust the bumper shocks where I believe the vertical adjustment is.
Any help would be great!
Regards,
Mark

IIRC (it's been several years) if you remove the rubber plug and strip that is just outside the large rubber bumper you can access the point where the shocks attach to the bumper. There is a little play in the bolts that mount the bumper to the bumper shock, but not much. There is also a little play in the bumper shock mounts to the body to align but not too much. You may need to remove the rear bumper valance and the muffler to get access. There is a clamp type attachment held by an upper and lower bolt that attached the bumper shock to the car.

It's possible that the rear bumper was hit and something is bent.....

Thanks for the response. No damage just misaligned.....hopefully an easy fix.

I imagine that between the play in the bumper shock mountings (to the body) and the play in the bumper holes you could close that 1/2 inch gap. Might take a slight bit of adjustment on both sides to get it straight.

Adjusting the height of the bumper shock will mostly come from loosening the single nut on the actual shock itself. You may need to loosen the clamp as well to get it to move enough. Fortunately most (if not all) of the adjustment will need to come from the driver side where you don't have the oil tank in the way. You might need to remove the lower fender panel to get proper access. Removing the bumper will also required.

Good luck with it!

The bumper shocks are held in by a 'u' strap towards the rear, and a single bolt at the front.
First, make sure the two 13mm bolts on the 'u' strap are both installed, and tight - very easy to access above the heat exchangers.
I was able to adjust mine by loosening the strap and shoving a delrin wedge into the strap on the botton of the strut, so far- so good.
