Don't like tails (except the RS duck is growing on me). Don't like red or white (but the most fun car to date was a white one). I appreciate wide bodies but it isn't me. I want it to be reliable so I can drive it every day. Sooo...I'm drawn to the 3.2 cars because they are fairly modern yet bombproof. I like SC's because they share many of the qualities of the 3.2 cars, and the SCWDP guys are a damn fine bunch. I like early cars because I seem to get the biggest grin driving them, and the colors, chrome and the lines are beautiful. I also love the 993, but I don't want to spend that kind of money. So yes, you are right that I don't quite know which one I want, and I do love all 911s, almost equally. When I sit down to read Peter Morgan's book every night (sick, isn't it) I always pick a different chapter. I'm hoping I'll know it when I see/drive it. More will be revealed. |
The funny thing is that my love affair with the 911 reached its peak with the 930. The tray spoiler and fat fenders with black trim was outstanding. Back then all 911's were off limits to impressionable kids like myself due to lack of funds. Hell if someone gave me the car I couldn't afford the insurance or maintainence on it. I won't even go into maturity.
As the years go by I prefer the more graceful lines of the rear without spoiler and not so outrageous fender bulges captured by the SC/Carrera models. For me these cars embody everything that is Porsche. What adds to the whole picture is the obvious commitment so many people have with their Porsche, be it the early models, the 914, the water cooled, or the 911. This devotion is hard to come by in these days of Ford Expeditions, in car DVD players, and Starbucks coffee. Oh yeah, the smell. Yes my Carrera smells like our old 67 Squareback of my youth. Kinda musty in a good way. Funny how smells instantly take you home! |
It's funny to hear somebody exstol the virtues of the early cars when they've got a 3.6l, SC flares, and a 964 spoiler. Seems like all you've got left to claim as an "early car" is bumper style.

this might help both nostatic's problems. |
HA!
Just read the caption to the picture and apply it. How much is 7200 miles divided by ___ inches? |
Ah, the early car smell, worthy of a thread all by itself. Over the winter I replaced my early horsehair comfort seats with racing seats, and removed the rear sound pad. With these changes & no rear seats/carpet, I've pretty much lost the old VW smell. I'm really surprised how much I miss it, does Pep Boys sell old horsehair smell in a can? They would make millions! Well, dozens. Maybe.
