Will you put $500 down for a $1000 hard Targa Top?
Would you be willing to make a $500 downpayment on a $1000 aftermarket hard Targa Top, provided it's a high-quality, leak/wind proof item? Note: I'm not building anything, not selling anything, just trying to get a feel for the level of interest out there.

I'd have to see a sample, but beyond that - I'd have no problem with it. One query - the folding vinyl top became standard because the brake reservoir blocking the installtion of the hard top. Is the hard top on a later car a "leave at home" option only? And yep, I know we'd still have our vinyl tops for emergency downpours - I'm just curious.

It's hard to criticize Saratoga and Sundial, when most regular stock roofs leak and are quite worn out...

Wayne, did you mean most original folding tops? As the factory hard tops seal very well all around and do not have the wear and weak points of the folding units.

Here's what the factory hardtop looks like installed. I suspect that this particular top has been refinished by a previous owner. The top does not leak, rattle or squeek. The top can be stored under the front hood. There are instructions concerning the orientation of the top's under hood storage on the cover of the fuse panel. If you own a targa '74-'75 targa that has a second set of latch sockets in the underside of the upper windshield frame that would accommodate the cabrolet top latches, you may indeed have one of these cars.
Please note in the saratoga top description that it fits only cars with folding tops. If you were to duplicate the factory top, it would have to be set up with the proper hardware to fit a folding top car. My car has the sockets also in the top of the windshield frame for a factory folding top as well as the sockets described above for the cabrolet type fasteners used on the factory hardtop. In looking at the top it appears to me that it could be made and sold in the price range that being discussed here on this thread. I bought a used factory hardtop for my 78sc. The hardtop eliminated all wind noise and has more clearence which allowed me to install a roll cage and still be able to remove the top easily.
I think most targas have a second set of mounting holes for the hardtop latchs they are just covered by the materal that covers the panel that the sunvisors mount to. If you feel along the edge of the surface above the sunvisor mounts, you should be able to feel the indentations where the latchs mount.
