Dash camera recommendations
 

Hey guys,

I've searched this forum and the web up and down and I can't find much information on dash cams. I want to get one installed because I live in the Montreal area where drivers find their licenses in cereal boxes. Anyone care to share their experience?

I did a write up on the Contour. It does well once you get past the known issues. People seem to like the Go Pro.

Go Pro here... love it... I use it for scuba diving, track, road, whatever... They just came out with a new version, check it out.

Since then I got a polarized lens to cut the glare from the windshield, a flat cover to avoid the fisheye effect... and a few other goodies...

I don't have one, but friends swear by the Go Pro.

Just bought a gopro hero3 online.

Too many issues with the contour.

So I'm looking to make some videos so I can watch on those stormy winter days : )

Used an old sony camcorder in the meantime.

But there is now a new version with built in wifi so you can control it with a remote or your iPhone... three models... Hero3... so tempted to give mine to my daughter and get the new one...

GoPro here as well ... i have the older version but there's a guy on Rennlist (Tony Oldham) who fabricates and sells remote start buttons with any length cable that you need.

I have the start button mounted in my dash with an led witness light ...

I'd definitely recommend the gopro with a suction cup mount. One cool position that I like is mounted to the targa glass behind/between the seats looking forward.
If you are looking for something to record all the time, you'd want to get an extra battery, and extra memory cards. There might also be some way to use the gopro skeleton body and output the video to another memory, and also have it constantly charging so you don't have to worry about recharging all the time.

Gopro hero 3 just came out... White model is...black... and it's $199. Plenty sufficient.

I have a Contour. Works fine and you can rotate the lens if the mount is crooked. You don't get the fish-eye view that the Go Pro has but Go Pro has lots of better commercials.

I'm super cheap. My 911 has three cameras in it, now. They're $38 each, and I added a $15 wide angle lens to each one (although they now have a $44 model with a 120° wide angle lens). They record in true 720p HD, with audio, and are constantly charged through a USB cable. They record to the small SD chips, and can be set to record in continuous a loop.

Setting them up requires a little more work than some of the cameras mentioned here -- but like I said, I'm cheap.

You can see the rear-facing one on a little bracket I put on my license plate.

HA! That's an awesome clip Jack! Aside from the fact that it scared the living s**t out of me when I clicked play with my Sennheiser HD 280 pro headset on my head and volume set too high...

I loved seeing the GTR appear...nice pass and way to represent old school engineering over new school! ;)

The feeling I get from go pros is that you have to push record every time you get in the car. I just want something to help me out if I need to deal with my insurance company. I think I'll try my luck with something cheap and see what happens. No idea how I'll wire it up tho...

Dash Camera Addition
 

So thought I'd add my own addition to this thread. Purchased from Amazon a unit called an "E-Prance Mini 0801" Mini DVR Recorder. Comes directly from China, reasonable price and size. Total cost with a 32GB mini-SIM is $117 to the door.
Installed it yesterday in the car, (easy) with no special cable routing at this time. Seems to work great with one outing. Instruction manual is really basic but I figured it out OK. It does loop, comes on with the 12V power. I have it set to do 5min. interval files. This is what distinguishes a dash cam as files have to be deleted along the way to continuously loop.
There are lots of settings and it has GPS capability. I actually ordered the non-GPS version but they sent the GPS unit ?
This is truly a dash cam, is not weather proof for outside use. Does have a battery and I've downloaded the files to my computer (they are huge files) just to see what they look like. I think this will be fine for my curiosity recording at a track for a few laps. I really just got it to have records of poor drivers, speeding cops, and liability issues when I'm out. I drive long distances in my car and have some long trips coming up during the warm months. Interested to see if it lasts.
If I don't hate it, I'll improve the cable but otherwise, can't see where I'd do anything else. The thing is the size of an old style film container and pops off if you want to bring it to your computer to download a file. You can also view the files on the tiny screen if you're eyes are good enough. If something "happens" while driving, it will either automatically lock that file using a G-force threshold you set or you hit one button and lock that file from being overwritten.
I'll get a second one for my other work car if this one survives awhile.

I use the Mobius. It is used in the RC model community because it is so compact and light.

I have mine mounted under my rear view mirror pointed forward. Nice thing about the Mobius is lots of support and help on the internet.

As a dash camera you can program it to come on automatically and to loop. You hook up the USB mini jack and feed it power from the switched 12vdc and it will turn on with the ignition. Also you can program it to flip the image so you mount it upside down.

Software is easy to use. It has an LED on the back so you know it is recording as a dash camera.

And a kit costs from $50.00 to $85 on eBay and Amazon. Lots of accessories too.

A VERY good dash cam with lots of features for little money.....and it is so tiny it is easy to conceal for theft and cop reasons.

Produces quick time files.
