Spruce up wheel crests?
I have done a search and found several comments about repainting the metallic crests that fit inside the older center caps, but nothing I can find talks about how to polish or clean them. I just bought one replacement off ebay and it looks perfect. I was worried it was the wrong part. Anyway, now my other three look realy dingy in comparison. They are not damaged and the enamel(?) painted parts have held up very nicely considering their age. The part that looks bad is the "gold" part which I don't really know if it's some sort of paint or just the metal's color or what. I've tried some very mild rubbing compound which had no effect, good or bad. Any suggestions?

Polishing wheel with jewelers rouge has worked for me. My bench grinder did the trick.
