Accelerator slow to return
 

Hi Gang, I found no solution in the archives so here is the problem.

1975 911 S with 1983 911 SC motor

At warmed up idle I punch accelerator, car revs normally to 3-4k rpm
The return to normal idle <1k takes 7 seconds.

At the engine shroud, accelerator/throttle linkage seems normal. Spring tight and snaps back quickly when depressed.

At pedal end. With carpet and floor board removed accelerator linkage seems sluggish to return to rest.

With engine running I can manually pull pedal linkage to normal idle in appropriate time.

Is there a spring to assist the return of the pedal in the '75S?

Is this a bushing issue at the pedal end? (Car is 37 Years old but only has 40k miles and has spent its entire life in a cool.garage- please don't be the bushings)

Any thoughts?

Lubrication at the pedals?
Try a little contact cleaner and some spray lube.

Probably issue with plastic bushings in pedal cluster

Rebuild cluster with the bronze bushing kit...very easy upgrade and worth while

Solved the problem without removing the pedal cluster
 

Though I know the upgrade to the bronze bushings is eventually going to need to be done,
I didn't have the stomach to start that project tonight because I didn't want to deal with the master cylinder in my 75 S.

I removed the throttle cable linkage to the pedal cluster to see where the sticking was actually occurring.

Once removed the throttle cable assembly was very smooth and free flowing. however the pedal assembly was very difficult to move. I compared that to it a 1983 SC pedal cluster I had on my workbench. The SC cluster was very loose and moved freely.

I removed the cotter pin which held the accelerator mechanism in place. And actually had to put quite amount of force to get the mechanism to move out of the pedal cluster.
It was metal on metal very dry and difficult to move. Once I exposed about an inch of the mechanism I used white marine grease on it and worked it into the assembly.

At that point the accelerator mechanism with free moving.

I have included a photograph from my 1983 pedal cluster assembly for illustration.

I hope this helps someone in the future.

Thanks everyone who posted here gave me the idea how to fix this thing. The photograph shows the cotter pin with needs to be removed to get access to lubercate the accelerator pedal assembly.
