What the heck, i say go for it on porsche's part. But, while their at it, why don't they just dump the rear seats and mount that big ol honking motor right there. Kind of like an almost mid eng. 911 with the tranny in the rear. Have the rear window fold back like the targa for easy access. Hell I should be a porsche engineer. ;)

Whoa, I haven't seen a physics problem like that since I took my Professional Engineer exam many years ago ;) . Don, I'm talking ONLY about a generic Boxer motor design vs. a generic V motor design - not the vehicle itself and all the ancillaries!!! This discussion goes back to previous threads with Sam regarding the installation of cast iron Chevy V8's in old 911's. I'm fairly certain Porsche have made the requisite modifications to accomodate the new SUV motor in the 996. I'm sure it will be an impressive car to many.
BTW, I don't care much about what happens to Porsche these days. Why would I? They make no cars (oops! I should say cars & trucks) I'm interested in. If they did, I'd be driving one right now. IMO, the WRX is the hottest thing out there right now - race-bred technology just like the old days at Porsche! -- Curt |
I already have about 450hp and 425lbs/ft. I wonder what the torque figue is and how quick it comes in.
I could not tell that the center of gravity has been raised (aluminum heads, manifold etc) but I guess someone could. I think that the people that can are the same ones that could tell the difference between a full tank and a half tank of gas.....they are good. this will be a good topic for a while until the car comes out.....and then for some time after that. ;) |
Sure it's going to be bigger, heavier and with all the electronic nannies, even easier for ANYONE to drive fast. Should be a real impressive performer...by the numbers, but it'll probably lose even more of the traditional 911 soul. The 911 evolved into something that's more of a GT than a pure sports car years ago.
For the record, Porsche still builds a sports car, though. It just says "Boxster" on it instead. Be sure to get one with 3 pedals. |
Hello
Old rumors are news from today ? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-964-993-technical-forum/25964-997-v8.html |
So the real question is, if water boxers go for cheap money on the recycle market, how cheap can you get a P-car v-8 for?
Maybe I'd put that in my mustang and smoke it (er the tires of course). That type of transplant would be acceptable wouldn't it....;) |
