Axle flange seals depth

Does anyone know if the axle flange (diff)oil seals sit flush or below flush(bottomed out). It's a 72 915 tranny. I seemed to have read that one side is flush and the other is inset.........I think.

bottomed out. i use the old seal upside down and a hammer to seat the new seal.
