Engine Drop
Am dropping 1985 Carrera engine to replace a number of parts for general maintenance. I’ll list these parts below.
If you have any suggestions as to what I should look at and what I should do while the engine is out, I’d welcome your input. I was going to replace all the oil seals but have grown fond of adding 2-3 quarts monthly and changing the filter every other month. No leaks are over the manifolds. I drive under 1,000 miles per month. I'm planning to dump the sump and tank once a year. I've been checking the oil consistently, placing a few hot drops from the stick on a sheet of brilliant white, glossy paper. It's very clean. (Cannot say the same for garage floor.) Replacing:
Notes: Engine has turbo valve covers and collapsible return tubes. Valve clearance was set a few months ago. Flywheel sensor, cylinder head temp sensor, starter, distrib cap & rotor, ignition wires were recently replaced. You have a pretty good list. I say replace the internal oil thermostat while you have the engine out too. Mine was stuck open.
|
Rear main seal, any external seals and gaskets that are hard/impossible to get to with the engine in..
|
How many miles on the engine? If over 100,000 check for head stud (lower) breakage and possible valve guides and valve grind.
|
Thanks guys ~
Engine has 230,000 miles. |
I am going through a similar maintenance and would suggest the following:
|
2-3 qts for each 1000 miles, 230K on a 3.2, your valve guides are most likely toast. You should plan on a top end rebuild at the least.
|
Synthetic Gear Lube? Are you sure?
|
Vaccum lines
Replace the vacuum, and fuel lines:

my suggestion is to do a search on engine drop and you will find many ideas
a 1985 trans. will be a 915 - so do NOT put a synthetic gear oil in it; use Swepco I dunno how the above opinion was arrived at but it conflicts with everything else |
Relax RW, I was just playing off Draco's out-of-nowhere comment.. no such thing as a "901.6" as far as I know!
And I say use Kendall in a 915! :D |
Synthetic Trans Oil
A mechanic (Richard Danvers) that used to work on the car put the synthetic in when I first got the engine at 62,000 miles. (It's in a 1980 Targa. At the time I had the option to rebuild my existing '80 engine or get the 85 Carerra -- I chose the latter.)
I wast told that once synthetic has been run in a trans, it's not good to put fossil oil in afterwards --- stay with synthetic. |

 |
Either way change the gear lube after 1000 miles to get most of the synthetic out.
