About 25 yrs ago Don Prudhome swore he would never race again. His compeitiors car blew a clutch, which cut his car in half at speed. The front of the dragster was weaving in front of Don's car thru the traps. Shook him a bit.

Cool

bell...it was common knowledge years ago that drag/street power shifting would literally blow the clutch sometimes and possibility send the disc to visit you in the cabin. A pedicure was the best that could be hoped for. Well, maybe vented shoes would be better. A company named Lakewood, or something like that, made a bellhousing that would prevent the uninvited guest from entering the cabin..Big blocks were more prone to this, if I remember correctly .......Ron

This is my story, i race super late stock cars and have always run stock gm flex plates with a small clutch, the ring gear broke came through the top of the dash after blowing the bell housing off the motor, the bell housing looked like a shark bit it, i was going about 110 at the time 5 laps to go i was in the lead by a whole straight away, o well, Kevin

Scatter shields have been in dragracing rulebooks for years along with driveshaft loops, both to keep broken thingies from launching into soft body tissue of drivers. "Big Daddy" Don Garlits is missing part of a foot and was a pioneer of putting the engine behind you, remember the old-style dragsters that looked like a bathtub had been bolted on behind the engine ?

i had a scatter shield on my previous civic, i've heard somewhere where a front driver had this happen and it took the guys leg off after coming into the passenger compartment, which is the reason i added one (i didn't drag race, mainly autocrossed/open track'd it) but the added weight was a fair trade-off for the safety if something ever did happen.
he shoud have also had hood pins
