Is my alternator pooched?

Trying to fix some fan scraping, I replaced the outer pulley half, because the old one had been chewed away from being mounted improperly, and developed a wobble. I installed the new one, and found it also won't sit straight, because the alternator shaft has been worn away. Am I screwed here? New alternator? I'd hate to have to buy a new one, because I just bought this one a year or 2 ago.

Those threads look messed up, as does your fan. I would think you'll need to replace both....

You could try and band-aid it with some high strength JB Weld and see how that holds up.

Chris, I recently replaced my alternator-- you are welcome to the core which likely could be rebuilt. There are some other issues with it. E-mail me if you are interested.

Richard

So it can be repaired without replacing the entire alternator? That's good news.

I thought about jb welding it, but that seems like a pretty dicey thing to try.

Richard, thanks for the offer. I'll let you know how a repair works out.

Your wobbly pulley seems to have worn a significant groove in the fans shaft.

That's the shaft I'm talking about, where the pulley sits. The threads are fine - the nut goes on and torques down with no problem.

I'm taking it in to a machine shop today, and we'll see what they can do with it. I few years ago my pilot bearing on the tranny input shaft blew, and the end of the main shaft got worn down really badly. I was able to have it rechromed, and that worked like a charm, and at a fraction of the cost of replacing the main shaft.

Then your alternator is fine. That shaft is part of the fan.

weld up the fan hub and carefully reshape it with a disc cutter, grinder, file, etc.

Yep. Took it into a head and block shop today and that's exactly what he's going to do.
