My Mirror has come loose!
The drivers side (stock) mirror (electric, heated, etc) on my '85 911 has worked its way loose to the point where it likes to fold back under wind resistance. Can someone tell me how to reach the bolt (I assume it's a bolt) head to tighten it up just a bit? Any other tips?
Thanks! |

What I would do.
Remove interior door panel. Find the wires going to mirror, cut them in convenient place so later you can splice in some wire to make them longer, 1 ft. Now remove the mirror from the door. Pull the wires out. Remove the mirror glass from the rubber. Remove the motor and rubber from the metal body, pull the wires out. With the large (size ?) triple square drive, tighten till feels good. Note, a plastic piece separates the rotating parts and provides a bearing surface, it might have to be replaced. Note, there is a strong compression spring under the triple square. If the plastic bearing has to be replaced, said Ts has to be removed. The above is what I would do. This is 911 repair! George from the door, Allen from the top. |

Some pics.
Triple square is size 12 BTW The pencil is where all the wires go thru and where the TS would tighten. Thus the reason to pull the wires out. Maybe the reason the mirror is loose is the plastic bushings are shot, the 2 round ones and the triangle. The spring takes my body weight to re thread. BTW There is an early and late mirror glass, motor and metal housing, but by 85 its prob the late, lighter, ring type. ![]() Later type glass attachment(ring type) ![]() ![]() George |

This happened with my car a few years ago. You definitely do not need to cut any wires, and in fact you don't even need to get inside the door to fix this.
You will need to remove the glass and disconnect the wiring in order to tighten the tension/pivot bolt.

Thanks everyone. I do have one more question:
As I look at the mirror glass from outside the car, it's not obvious how to remove it. Is that the glass laying face down on the wood table in ganun's photo, which seems to be somehow glued or attached to the rubber attachment - so that when I pry directly onto the mirror glass from outside the vehicle, the rubber unit behind releases and the glass and attachment come off as one piece? |

Yep, glass is glued plastic backing.
Look underneath, if only 1 round hole, (drain) then its the early style, mirror snaps in. If there are 2 openings, the round plus a slot, use the slot and a small screw driver to rotate the ring ccw to release the glass. Only need to rotate about 1/4 inch. |
